Menominee Casino Resort in Wisconsin Shuttered by ‘Beyond Significant’ Cyberattack

The Menominee Casino Resort in Wisconsin remained closed at the time of publication, having confirmed it was the victim of a devastating cyberattack Friday.

General manager Daniel Hanson said on the casino’s Facebook page that Menominee officials were working with cybersecurity and forensic experts from the FBI to investigate and assess the impact.

He described an “attempted external attack on our computer systems,” but added he did not believe any secure information has been compromised.

If it is determined that the personal information of our guests or team members was exposed, we will notify those affected individuals in writing,” Hanson said.

Meanwhile, Tribal Legislature Chairman Gunnar Peters told NBC 26 that the breach was “beyond significant, so we had to close.”

Casino officials have not said whether the attack was accompanied by a ransom demand.  Hanson told The Post- Crescent he believed hackers were trying to shut down the casino, and that the financial hit will be “substantial.”

Ransomware Epidemic

Former Cisco CEO John Chambers told Yahoo! Finance on Monday that ransomware attacks were on the rise. He said American companies could expect 65,000 to 100,000 attacks in 2021 alone, each one costing an average of $170,000 to resolve.

This comes amid several high-profile attacks that have grabbed the headlines in the past month. Utmost of these, in May, the systems of US oil network Colonial Pipeline were breached by hackers who gained access using a compromised password.

The company paid $4.4 million to the hackers, believed to be operating from Russia, to regain control of its systems.

The gambling industry has long been a target for ransomware hackers, particularly the online sector. That’s because of the relative ease of knocking a website offline with a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack during peak traffic. For example, this could be during a major sports event for a betting site, or a flagship tournament series for an online poker site.

Land-based casinos, on the other hand, are prime targets for hackers on the hunt for valuable data to steal. That’s because of the large amount of sensitive financial information the casinos hold on their customers.

Tribal casinos have increasingly found themselves targeted. In October of last year, three were shut down by cyberattacks in a matter of days, two in Idaho and one in California.

California’s Cache Creek Casino Resort was forced closed for three full weeks.

When Iran Knocked LVS Offline

But the biggest known cyberattack against a land-based casino occurred not for reasons of theft or extortion, but for political payback.

It was carried out in 2014 against Las Vegas Sands Corp. by a group believed to be working for the Iranian government, likely a hacking collective named “Ashiyane.”

It’s believed to have been a personal attack on the company’s then-Chairman and CEO, the late Sheldon Adelson.

The Republican megadonor was a vocal opponent of the Obama administration’s negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. Months earlier, Adelson opined that the US should detonate a nuclear bomb in the Iranian desert.

On February 10, 2014, LVS was plunged into chaos when computers flatlined, servers shut down, and hard drives were wiped clean, as malware ripped through the company’s networks. The attack lasted for around 48 hours, causing an estimated $40 million-worth of damage.

Greentube Launches Jackpot Slots in Swiss Market with Grand Casino Luzern

Online casino games supplier Greentube, part of the larger NOVOMATIC Interactive group, has strengthened its existing relationship with Swiss operator Grand Casino Luzern to now enable its partner to distribute its jackpot titles in the local market.

During a month-long campaign launched to mark that expanded alliance, Greentube’s hit online slot jackpot content will be promoted across Switzerland via Casino Luzern’s mycasino.ch iGaming brand. The jackpot products will thus become available to Swiss players for the very first time.

Jackpot titles that will soon be rolled out across the local market include Cash Connection – Charming Lady, Red Hot Burning Clover Link, Phoenix Fortune, and Book of Ra Mystic Fortunes as well as Greentube’s entire Diamond Link series of jackpot slots.

Casino Luzern has created a special Greentube Jackpots section on the mycasino.ch site that is fully dedicated to the new content. The newly added titles have provided the casino’s players with access to products that have been proven in the market.

Greentube and Casino Luzern first teamed up in August 2019, or about a month after the reorganization of the Swiss online gambling market. The land-based casino was one of the first gambling establishments in the country to have been granted permission by local regulators to conduct online casino activities.

And it should be noted that Casino Luzern was the first local partner Greentube went live with to mark its debut in the Swiss market.

Further Growth in Switzerland

The launch of its jackpot games portfolio in Switzerland will help Greentube further cement its position as a leading supplier to local operators and will significantly strengthen its local offering.

Commenting on their latest major news, Greentube Sales & Key Account Manager for Switzerland Lisa Sandner said that jackpot games are extremely popular in the local market which makes them very excited to introduce their titles to Swiss players.

Ms. Sandner went on to say that they have “worked hard to develop the most thrilling jackpot games on the market, drawing on our expertise from the land-based sector where this type of content is king.”

She further added that with Swizterland’s well-established land-based casino sector, they are certain Greentube’s jackpot games will resonate well with players, and that they are excited to introduce their content with Casino Luzern and further strengthen their partnership with the gambling venue.

Grand Casino Luzern CEO Wolfgang Bliem said that jackpot games and the thrill that comes by chasing big wins “are well liked among our players” and that Greentube’s products have been performing “extremely well with our customer base and we are happy to introduce their exciting jackpot titles to our players.”

Ben Affleck Returns to Las Vegas’s Gaming Tables, Seen at the Wynn

Actor Ben Affleck was spotted at Las Vegas’s Wynn Resort and Casino’s high limit room at about 3 am one day this week, according to published reports. He did not let the fact that seven years ago he was banned from another Vegas casino for card counting stop him from playing the tables once again at a local gaming property.

Early Wednesday morning, the 48-year-old movie star was seen alone at a Wynn gaming table, possibly playing blackjack, along with a brunette dealer.

He was wearing a black T-shirt and baseball cap. His fashionable sunglasses were partially hidden in his shirt. Wynn staff were nearby to ensure fans kept their distance, TMZ reported.

Affleck Says He Is Decent at Blackjack

In 2014, Affleck was banned from the Hard Rock Casino. He has revealed in an interview with Details, “I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player.

And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos.”

In 2014, the staff at the Hard Rock said enough is enough and reportedly banned Affleck from blackjack for life due to alleged card counting.

Card counting is a technique used by blackjack players to gain an advantage over the house. Players keep track of what cards have left the shoe. This allows them to know the composition of the remaining cards.

Affleck has certainly been successful at blackjack. Back in 2001, he had a reported $800,000 win at the Hard Rock’s blackjack tables.

He has also won in poker. Affleck won the 2004 California State Poker Championship, outlasting 90 entries who paid $10,000 each to claim the $356,400 first-place prize.

Affleck was also a key figure in the Molly’s Game scandal — underground high-stake poker games originally run at the Viper Room in West Hollywood. The incident reportedly inspired the 2018 movie “Molly’s Game.”

Affleck was trained in poker by the likes of Annie Duke and Amir Vahedi. In 2019, Affleck was spotted playing poker at Commerce Casino cardroom in Los Angeles.

While at the Commerce,  Affleck ponied up $20,000 to sit down at a high-stakes poker table. Less than 15 minutes later, he left after winning $1,500, TMZ reported.

That night, Affleck nearly fell out of his chair during the game, tablemates told TMZ. He reportedly had a sobriety lapse around that time.

Affleck Now Working on Movie in Vegas

On Wednesday afternoon, Affleck reportedly was at The Palazzo at The Venetian Resort to work on a movie, TMZ and the Daily Mail reported.

The New York Post also reported Affleck was accompanied in Las Vegas by Jennifer Lopez’s mother, Guadalupe Lopez, 75.

Previously, the elder Lopez on one occasion won $2.4 million in an Atlantic City gaming property, the Post said. J-Lo says her mother is a “huge gambler,” the Post adds.

In recent weeks, Affleck and J-Lo, 51, were rumored to once again to be dating. His former fiance and current love interest, J-Lo, was in Miami this week to work on a music video.

Sports Bettor Finally Admits to 2004 Murder of Long Island Bookie’s Runner

A gambler who took part in the 2004 killing of a Long Island bookies’ runner has finally admitted his culpability in the case, Newsday reports.

Mark Orlando, then 33, lured Bobby Calabrese, 24, to a deserted industrial area in Island Park, between the mainland and the island of Long Beach.

Orlando had promised to hand over a $17,000 gambling debt to the younger man. But he had no intention of paying.

Instead, he and another man, Herve Jeannot, ambushed Calabrese. Orlando held the victim while former US Marine Jeannot shot him once in the head with a .44 caliber revolver. Jeannot shot him two more times in the back of the head as he lay on the ground.

Orlando hoped he could avoid paying the $17,000 debt he owed Calabrese’s boss by paying $4,000 to Jeannot to carry out the killing instead.

Mistrial Declared

Now 50, Orlando admitted this for the first time around two weeks ago, prosecutors said Monday. He confessed before a judge sentenced him to 23 years in prison.

He had previously been serving 25 years to life for the second-degree murder of Calabrese. But in 2019, a federal appellate court overturned his original conviction.

The appellate panel ruled a detective’s testimony that Jeannot had stated Orlando paid him to commit the murder violated the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment. The clause guarantees a defendant the right “to be confronted with the witnesses against” them and bars the admission of certain hearsay evidence.

Jeannot committed suicide at the Nassau County Jail in 2010, eight hours after his own conviction for murder.

It’s not clear what prompted Orlando to plead guilty at his retrial. But prosecutor Stefanie Palma said Monday it proved “what everyone has known for the last 16 years, that this defendant had Bobby Calabrese killed.”

‘Subhuman Coward’

Orlando’s conviction at last ends a long and painful journey for the Calabrese family, who were forced to endure six trials in total over 17 years.

Before Jeannot’s eventual conviction, two of his trials ended in hung juries, and the third was declared a mistrial,

“It takes a subhuman coward to find a sucker to carry out such a sickening act … You know you are guilty,” the victim’s mother, Kathy Calabrese, told Orlando Monday, as reported by Newsday. “If it wasn’t for you, Bobby would be with us.”

Calabrese was a high school wrestling champion, who, despite his fatal flirtation with illegal bookmaking, planned to become a police officer like his father. He was due to take the Long Beach Police Department entrance examination the day after he was killed.

Global Gaming Expo Announces In-Person Show to Return to Vegas in October

Commercial and tribal gaming professionals from across the globe will once again converge on Las Vegas this October for the 2021 installment of the Global Gaming Expo (G2E).

Officials with the American Gaming Association and Reed Exhibitions made the announcement this past week. The event will take place at the Sands Expo & Convention Center. Education sessions will start on Oct. 4, with the show floor opening the following day.

The show will conclude on Oct. 7.

“For over 20 years, G2E has been the leader in uniting the global gaming community and we are beyond thrilled to come together this October for the industry’s hallmark event,” said Korbi Carrison, G2E event director.

COVID-19 forced organizers to hold G2E in just a virtual format last year. This year’s event will include some virtual components as well.

Gaming Professionals Wanted G2E

The announcement came on the same day as Nevada officially reopened to full capacity, including the resort casinos in Las Vegas.

Clark County officials also lifted capacity restrictions for large gatherings, such as conventions.

We can’t wait to bring the industry back together in Las Vegas for G2E 2021,” said Meredith Pallante, AGA vice president of global events. “The industry has shown tremendous resilience throughout the pandemic and being able to gather together again will be another great milestone in our strong recovery.”

In April, G2E organizers said the goal was to hold an in-person event. However, that was dependent on them getting assurances attendee safety would not be compromised.

Last month, organizers surveyed industry stakeholders regarding their plans to attend the expo. More than 80 percent said they were at least somewhat likely to attend the show if it took place in Vegas, and 93 percent said an in-person convention was critical for the company’s business.

More than 80 percent also said they would definitely or probably make acquisitions based on attending the show.

First Major Vegas Expo Opens This Week

The week ahead features the first major convention returning to Las Vegas.

Not only is the World of Concrete one of the first major trade shows to return to Las Vegas since the pandemic started, but it also serves as the first expo inside the recently completed expansion at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Nearly $1 billion was invested to create the 1.4 million-square-foot west wing.

Other major events planned for the months ahead include the International Security Conference – ISC West 2021. That show starts July 19 at the Sands Expo. On Aug. 9, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS21) Annual Conference & Exhibition begins at the Sands.

In September, the Las Vegas Convention Center will serve as host to the Society for Human Resources Annual Conference and Expo.

The return of conventions will provide yet another spark for Las Vegas and its recovery.  According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, trade shows and other large gatherings support more than 40,000 jobs. Conventions also helped generate nearly $6 billion in economic output in 2017.
