Yggdrasil Boasts Spanish Casino Market Debut

Online casino games developer and supplier Yggdrasil Gaming has recently debuted its portfolio in the Spanish online gambling market.

Under a partnership with Casino Barcelona Online, the company has launched its library and it is now available to Spanish online gambling customers. Casino Barcelona players have access to player-favorites such as Valley of the Gods, Golden Fish Tank, and blockbuster titles Vikings go Berzerk and Vikings go Wild, among a number of others.

The recent Spanish launch was part of Yggdrasil’s strategy to maintain podium positions in attractive regulated online gambling markets.

Commenting on their expansion, Yggdrasil CEO Fredrik Elmqvist said that they are thrilled to go live in Spain and “offer our games to local players together with such a significant brand as Casino Barcelona.”

He added that the Spanish market:

has shown consistently strong growth and an increase in popularity over the last few years and we are excited about the upcoming opportunities. We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership that will see us continue to bring new and innovative content to the Spanish market with Casino Barcelona.

Yggdrasil first announced that it had teamed up with Casino Barcelona Online last November. Under the terms of their deal, the supplier has agreed to supply its portfolio of games as well as its BOOST in-game promotional tool to the operator.

News about the launch of its content with Casino Barcelona comes on the heels of the recent announcement that Yggdrasil has signed a content supply deal with another Spanish operator – Casino Gran Madrid. It is yet to be seen when Spanish players of the operator will be able to access the supplier’s games.

Accelerating Growth

Commenting on the addition of Yggdrasil games to their existing offering, Xavier Ballester, Director of Casino Barcelona Online, said that they are really proud to be the “first operator to offer Yggdrasil’s games in Spain and we are certain that their products will help accelerate the growth of our brand as a market leader in the country.”

The Spanish online gambling market has seen a stable growth over the past several years. The upward direction of the revenue generated was largely attributed to the authorization of online slots games in the country in 2014.

According to information by Spain’s gambling regulator, Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), online gambling grew 25.5% last year to €699 million. The growth continued in the first quarter of the year, as the most recent figures released by DGOJ showed.

Spain’s licensed online gambling operators generated a total of €193.2 million during the three months ended March 31, 2019, up 20.1% year-on-year. Online sports betting claimed the largest revenue chunk with €100.8 million. The figure reported represented a 26.2% annual increase.

The online casino sector saw a 20% rise during the first quarter of 2019 to €67.1 million. Online slots were the main driver of growth with quarterly revenue of €37.5 million, up 29.2% from the same three months of 2018.

New fantasy sports portal added to the mix in India

The daily fantasy sports (DFS) industry in India is booming. There have been several new companies to step into the market recently, including media company giant the India Today Group, which teamed up with news channel AajTak a little more than a week ago for a new fantasy sports platform. Another operator has emerged, an effort promoted by former cricket star, Kapil Dev.

new-fantasy-sports-portal-added-the-mix-indiaDev announced the new DFS portal during a ceremony at New Delhi’s The Lalit Hotel earlier this week. The platform, Apne11, features Dev as a brand ambassador and will operate similarly to other DFS platforms. It will also include its own “Kapil League,” which will reward the highest scorer on the site’s leaderboard with possibly as much as 25 lakhs (about $35,913). The top five finishers will also be able to meet the former cricket captain.

Dev said of the new platform, “I am thrilled to be associated with Apne11 as it will present an open opportunity for millions to compete against one another and have the chance to connect with sports on an even deeper level than before.”

Apne11 was founded by Ratul Sethi, who also attended the ceremony this week. He explained of the DFS industry in the country, “The gaming industry is undergoing a revolution and with one of the world’s largest youth population, India is poised to become one of the world’s leading markets in the gaming sector. Taking forward the same vision we want to make daily fantasy sports game experience simpler and reach tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Our endeavor is to unite India in coming together to celebrate sports in the country.”

Also present was Apne11 CEO Akshay Jaggi, who added, “The aim of Apne11 is to be the number one platform with the best experience ever. We are a customer-oriented company and for us was a natural decision to launch our innovative site in this market. Our team is doing our best to become the first choice in the hearts of the fantasy players.”

The expansion of DFS in India comes when the subject of gambling is still a hot-button issue. The activity received a slight boost a few weeks ago when the Delhi High Court rejected a plea by Avnish Mehrota, an activist with way too much free time on his hands, to shut down gaming sites in the country.

Spelinspektionen Teams Up With Other Agencies to Combat Money Laundering

Swedish authorities team up to counter money laundering, terrorist financing in gambling and other industries

Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, announced earlier this week that it has joined forces with 15 other agencies and watchdogs to develop together a strategy for combating money laundering and financing of terrorism.

The main tasks before Swedish authorities in their joint work will be to act as a forum for exchange of information and knowledge between all participating organizations, to identify, map, and analyze risks associated with money laundering and terrorist financing and compile national risk assessments that would help in combating crime, and to provide businesses with information that would help in their efforts to prevent becoming a tool for money laundering and terrorist financing.

Preventing Sweden’s gambling industry from being used for money laundering and financing of terrorism has also been one of the main tasks before licensed gaming and betting operators. The country opened its market for international operations early this year and more than 70 companies have been authorized by Spelinspektionen to operate in the space.

Gambling Companies and AML Efforts

In a statement published earlier this week on its official website, Spelinspektionen said that it will ramp up its efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing in the gaming industry and urged operators to cooperate and ensure that it has deployed the right tools to protect their operations.

Spelinspektionen noted that the process of licensing operators to provide gaming and betting services on the territory of Sweden also includes detecting the true owner of a license applicant. The regulator also stressed on the fact that it requires its licensees to ensure they have deployed effective Know Your Customer procedures for identifying their customers and the sources of their gambling money. KYC is a necessary element in countering money laundering and terrorist financing within the gambling industry.

Commenting on the latest wave of AML action, Fredrik Lindquist, who works with supervision and money laundering issues at Spelinspektionen, said that they are currently working on launching a service for verifying information about license applicants, including their group’s structure.

He went on to explain that such a service is a necessity as by creating complex cross-border group structures with legal entities in different jurisdictions, license applicants can hide their actual owners and the origin of their money.

News about Spelinspektionen’s collaboration with more Swedish authorities emerged shortly after the regulator’s Danish counterpart – Spillemyndigheden – launched a new program for combating money laundering within Denmark’s regulated gambling industry.

Spillemyndigheden launched last month a special whistleblower program that encourages people employed at locally licensed gambling companies to report violations or potential violations of Denmark’s anti-money laundering regulations.

Spelinspektionen’s announcement also arrives as the UK Gambling Commission has slapped hefty fines on two of its licensees – Gamesys and Kindred Group – for money laundering failures. Gamesys received a £1.2 million penalty, while Kindred Group’s Platinum Gaming got a £1.6 million for failing to address incidents of stolen money being used for gambling.
