Ex-Raiders Player Henry Ruggs Remains in Nevada Prison Camp During Super Bowl

As Henry Ruggs III’s former Las Vegas Raiders teammates watched Super Bowl LVIII this past Sunday, he continues his sentence at a Nevada prison camp with dorms rather than jail cells.

Ruggs, 25, is incarcerated at Stewart Conservation Camp, which is described as a minimum-security complex in Carson City, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

No word if he watched the iconic football game played at Allegiant Stadium.

Nowadays, he’s been earning $2.50 an hour at a job that has him work off-site for government offices, KLAS reported.

Transfer From Prison

First, he was incarcerated at High Desert State Prison, after pleading guilty to two charges stemming from a deadly collision.

In September, he reportedly was transferred to the minimum-security facility.

Ruggs was sentenced in August to at least three years in prison. He could be granted parole in August 2026.

In November 2021, Ruggs was driving up to 156 mph on Rainbow Boulevard in Las Vegas. He crashed his Corvette into a Toyota RAV4, driven by Tina Tintor, 23. She and her dog, Max, both perished in the fiery collision.

Ruggs’ blood-alcohol level after the deadly incident was 0.16, authorities revealed. That’s double the legal limit.

Initially, he was charged with DUI resulting in death, DUI resulting in bodily harm, two counts of reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm, and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

Ruggs faced up to 50 years in prison if he had been convicted of dropped charges, prosecutors said.

But he pled guilty to reduced charges of DUI resulting in death and vehicular manslaughter.

The firearm charge was one of those dropped counts even though a loaded gun was found in his Corvette after the crash.

Ruggs was socializing at TopGolf in Las Vegas hours before the crash.

Courtroom Apology

Before being sentenced, Ruggs last year apologized to Tintor’s family, his former team (the Las Vegas Raiders), and his relatives.

“To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions the morning of Nov. 2, 2021, have caused you, your family and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max,” Ruggs said in the courtroom.

I let my family, my teammates and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many.”

After the crash, Ruggs was released by the Raiders. He had signed a four-year NFL contract reportedly worth more than $16M.

He was a first-round NFL Draft pick. Ruggs led the Raiders in receiving yards in 2021. The former Alabama standout had 24 receptions, 469 receiving yards, and two touchdowns through seven games.

His sentence has been questioned by former NFL star and celebrity O. J. Simpson, who believed it to be short, compared to his own sentence for armed robbery, which was between nine and 33 years.

Urban One Remains Focused on Owning Casino Following Richmond Defeat

Urban One is unwavering in its aspirations to own a casino resort.

Urban One is a media conglomerate based in Maryland that owns and runs radio stations and television networks that primarily cater to the Black community. The firm hoped to build a more than a half-billion integrated resort casino in Richmond. But voters in the Virginia capital twice rejected a citywide ballot referendum needed to authorize the project.

Richmonders narrowly rejected Urban One’s 2021 casino pitch by a 51%-49% vote. The electorate again rejected a similar proposal from Urban One last month, but at a more decisive rate of 62%-38%.

Urban One, publicly traded on the Nasdaq, released its third-quarter earnings report this week and met with shareholders and analysts on a call. During the conversation, Urban One CEO Alfred Liggins revealed the media company continues to desire to own a casino.

In March, Urban One divested its stake in MGM National Harbor for $145.5 million, the richest casino in Maryland that’s located just outside the nation’s capital in Oxon Hill. Urban One in 2016 was welcomed by MGM Resorts to make a passive investment in the integrated resort to diversify the ownership structure of the project.

Liggins yesterday affirmed the company’s intention to pursue another casino stake.

Yes, absolutely. It’s a great business,” Liggins said. “We made a lot of money on our MGM investment. We made like 3.5 times our investment.”

Liggins recognizes that the U.S. economy is quite different today than it was when the $1.4 billion MGM National Harbor casino was built and opened in December 2016.

“There is risk. You can overbuild, and interest rates are higher now,” Higgins said.

Richmond Rejections

Formerly known as Radio One, the Silver Spring firm was chosen by Richmond city officials in 2021 as the Virginia capital’s preferred gaming partner. Despite lacking any experience developing and/or operating a casino, the Richmond Resort Casino Evaluation Panel picked Urban One over competing bids from Bally’s Corporation and The Cordish Companies, the latter of which operates Live!-branded casinos in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Richmond’s casino evaluation panel, handpicked by the City Council, sought to provide social equity by selecting Urban One. The proposal, known as ONE Casino + Resort in 2021, was more than half of a billion-dollar undertaking made through a partnership with casino operator Peninsula Pacific Entertainment (P2E). The casino proposal additionally involved more than 50 individual investors, many of whom identified as minorities.

Unfazed by the 2021 will of the Richmond people, city officials and Mayor Levar Stoney (D) initiated a second gaming referendum, with Urban One remaining its development partner. However, for the 2023 push, Urban One was partnered with Churchill Downs after it acquired P2E.

The change didn’t matter, as capital residents rejected the casino again. The vote was divided among social demographics, with wealthier areas more opposed to the project than more blue collar neighborhoods.

Maryland Opportunity?

Urban One developing a casino in its home state of Maryland, where the company is most known, would be ideal. Maryland’s gaming law restricts the number of casinos to six. However, there are pathways to expand the industry, as state voters have a recent track record of backing gaming expansion questions.

During the November 2008 election, Marylanders passed a statewide ballot referendum that amended the state constitution to allow slot machines at five venues in the counties of Anne Arundel, Cecil, and Worcester, plus a city casino in Baltimore and another on state property in Rocky Gay State Park.

Table games with authorized through a subsequent referendum that passed in 2012. That same 2012 referendum question included the authorization of a sixth casino, with that license ultimately being awarded to MGM.

In 2020, voters further expanded gaming with retail and online sports betting.

There are now efforts to legalize iGaming through yet another gaming referendum. Could Urban One convince state lawmakers to include a provision on the internet gambling question to allow a seventh casino in the Old Line State? Purely speculation at this time, but Marylanders seem willing to continue growing its legal gambling options.

Road to the Kentucky Derby: Forte Remains Solid Favorite as Field Solidifies

We’re now four weeks away from the Kentucky Derby, and with the final three major prep races occurring Saturday, we now have a fairly clear picture of who will be running for the roses on May 6.

Tapit Trice
Tapit Trice, left, runs past Verifying down the stretch of Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, KY on Saturday. The win gave Tapit Trice 100 points toward qualifying for next month’s Kentucky Derby. (Image: Keeneland/Twitter)

Despite exciting wins by a pair of favorites, Tapit Trice in the Blue Grass Stakes and Practical Move in the Santa Anita Derby, neither of them looked as impressive enough to bump Forte from the mantle of presumptive Kentucky Derby favorite. (The other Derby prep, the Wood Memorial, featured 59-1 shot Lord Miles edging favorite Hit King for the upset win.)

Honestly, it was going to take a lot for that even to be considered. Assuming he stays healthy, Forte will likely be a strong betting choice as the horses head to the starting gate at Churchill Downs.

All the Todd Pletcher-trained colt has done to earn that is win five straight races. Not only have they been graded stakes wins, but that streak includes four Grade 1 wins. The last came last weekend in the Florida Derby in stirring fashion as Forte rallied from fifth place and well outside in stretch to score the victory.

Pletcher will actually come into Louisville with three contenders. Besides Forte, he also trains Tapit Trice and Kingsbarns, an undefeated colt who won the Louisiana Derby two weeks ago.

“We’re blessed,” Pletcher told reporters at Keeneland Saturday after Tapit Trice’s victory. “We’ve had a good spring, and now we got to hopefully have another good four weeks.”

The Case for Forte

Favorites have had a little bit of a dry spell recently in the Derby. The last to win was Triple Crown winner Justify in 2018, but the bettors’ choices have come close in recent years, with Epicenter, last year’s favorite, finishing second.

What I think helps Forte’s case this year is how he won the Florida Derby.  He had an outside post – 11th out of 12 – and found himself stuck in traffic for most of the race and looked to be out of contention when he finally made his move. Those conditions are about as close as you can get to a Kentucky Derby environment, where Forte could find himself battling 19 other competitors.

Pletcher had said the major prep race at Gulfstream Park would serve as a good test for his prized colt. The trainer came away pleased that Forte’s best part of the 1-1/8 mile Florida Derby was the final sixteenth, which would indicate he’d do well in the 1-1/4 mile Kentucky Derby.

What was impressive… was when he did make the lead, he kind of pricked his ears again which we’ve seen him do a number of times,” Pletcher said. “It kind of makes you believe there’s a little more in the tank there.”

After Saturday’s races, Circa Sports in Las Vegas kept Forte as favorite, with odds of +315, meaning a $100 wager would net $315.  Tapit Trice and Practice Move are next at +550 each, and Verifying, who lost by a neck to Tapit Trice Saturday, and Kingsbarns are +950.

If Not Forte, Then…

With up to 20 horses in the field, the Kentucky Derby is definitely not a conventional horse race, and with that large a field, it does present bettors with opportunities for value.

If you’re looking for an intriguing long shot possibility, one horse to consider is Two Phil’s, who won the Jeff Ruby Steaks two weeks ago at Turfway Park. Turfway, a Churchill Downs track in Florence, KY, has a synthetic tapeta track, which is different from the dirt track at Churchill.

But Two Phil’s won at Churchill last year on a sloppy track.

If there’s one thing that’s consistent about Louisville in May, it’s that the weather is anything but consistent. It can be 80 and sunny or gloomy and 50 or anywhere inbetween. Sometimes even in the same week. Over the last seven Derby days, it’s rained on five. However, only two of those led to sloppy track ratings, the last coming in 2019.

“I’m hoping it rains,” trainer Larry Rivelli told reporters after the Jeff Ruby.

So, that’s something to keep in mind should the clouds turn dark on May 7. Two Phil’s could be your silver lining.

At Circa, Two Phil’s Derby futures odds are +3000.

Who Will Run in the Kentucky Derby

The field for the Derby is based on points horses accumulate in prep races. Saturday’s races each awarded 100 points to the winner, with the runners up getting 40, the horses in third getting 30, and the horses finishing fourth receiving 20.

Those with the 18 highest point totals are guaranteed spot in the race, with slots also available for horses in Japan and Europe. If an owner withdraws a qualifying horse from contention, the horse with the next highest total of points becomes eligible.

Churchill Downs Senior Director of Communications Darren Rogers tweeted the updated point totals Saturday evening.
