new-york-mobile-sports-bets-break-2-billion-in-octoberNew York players reportedly wagered a total of $2.01billion using online platforms and mobile betting apps to hit the handle 30.5% higher than in the same month of 2022. The figure also represents a 14.2% higher level than $1.76 billion wagered in the state in September 2023.

Consequently, the market hit the record monthly revenue of $166.3million to exceed the September 2022 record of 165.5 million and stand for a 14.1% higher level than October 2022.The remarkable online sports betting result was extensively driven by several leading operators.

77% Market Share of FanDuel and DraftKings

FanDuel kept the New York market leading position with a 50% share in total revenues generated during October and the handle of $891.9 million representing a 44.5% stakein overall bets processed in the market in the given period. DraftKings followed with a 35.6% revenue share and the $652.3 million handle to get hold of a 32.5% share in the total market handle.

Individual Operator Contributions

The remaining around 15% of revenues and 23% of online bets placed in the state in October 2023 have been split to six major operators with their individual revenue and handle contributions standing as follows:

  • Resorts World Bet: Revenue $894,039; Handle $7.7M
  • Wynn Interactive: Revenue $313,363; Handle $12.3M

Mets Owner and Hard Rock Partners for a Casino License

The $2 billion record handle testifies about the season of the increased gambling-related activities in New York. Another argument supporting the trend comes from the recently made announcement that Mets owner Steve Cohen would partner with casino giant Hard Rock International to bid for the last of the three casino licenses available for a casino development in downtown New York.

$8 Billion Metropolitan Park Casino Development

The billionaire and the top-tier casino operator revealed plans to build an $8 billion Metropolitan Park casino and entertainment complex next to the Citi Field Stadium in Queens, New York City.

The hotel and casino project includes separate sports betting facility, as well as a wide range of amenities, such as a music venue, food hall, an entertainment park, and the associated parking and retail facilities.

Obtaining Support to Bid For the License

Cohen has reportedly hosted multiple community workshops and conducted more than 20,000 door-to-door conversations with local community members. The project has thus secured the support of more than 89% of the pooled community members who signed the petition to support the project and help Mets owner take a lead in the metropolitan casino license race.

Colorado Man Pleads Guilty to Damaging Nevada Solar Array Linked to MGM Casinos

The man who drove his car through a fence at a solar power facility and then created a blaze pled guilty in Las Vegas court last week.

Mohammed Mesmarian, 35, a one-time Colorado dentist, entered guilty pleas to two reduced charges: second-degree arson and malicious destruction of property, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

Initially, he was charged with committing an act of terrorism, arson, destroying or injuring real or personal property of another, and escape by a felony prisoner for the Jan. 3 incident.

Emotional Illness

He’s also claiming he’s suffering from emotional illness, so a judge could order that he receives treatment for mental health issues.

Mesmarian is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 18. He could head to prison or be given probation, KLAS reported.

Earlier this year, Mesmarian was ruled emotionally unfit for trial by Clark County District Court Judge Christy Craig, the Associated Press reported.

He was sent temporarily to a Nevada forensic psychiatric institution. Before the judge made the ruling, at least two psychiatrists examined Mesmarian.

His actions damaged a transformer and other infrastructure at the facility. Power was knocked out for weeks until repairs were made. When the power was out, MGM Resorts properties were able to find alternative sources of energy by turning to the grid.

Court Outburst

On Jan. 5, Mesmarian was arrested. He was located by police at a campground in Boulder Beach at Lake Mead.

Earlier this year, when he first appeared in court, Mesmarian blasted out, “There’s so much wrong in the whole system since I entered here. Nothing’s right. Just a bunch of Black people stuck in a room together.”

In a statement to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers, Mesmarian denied committing sabotage.

Complex Details

The complex where the incident took place is the Mega Solar Array facility. It’s located on U.S. 93, north of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The array is in the desert, some 25 miles from Las Vegas.

Chicago-based Invenergy operates the facility, and it provides power to 13 MGM Resorts properties.

The MGM Resorts Mega Array project — a key component of the gaming company’s long-term climate strategy — is the world’s largest renewable energy plant serving the gaming industry. It delivers 100 megawatts of power captured by 336K panels installed on 640 acres.

Meth-Dealing Kiwi Poker Champ Gets Add-On for Smuggling Drugs in Prison

A poker player from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, imprisoned in 2018 for drug smuggling, saw his sentenced increased this week – because of more drug smuggling.

Shane Thompson, also known as Shane Tamihana, enjoyed success at the poker tables in the mid-2010s. The highlight was winning the main event at the Sky City Casino’s Festival of Poker in 2016 for US$36,555. It was probably the only “honest” money he made that year.

His luck ran out in 2017 when he was nailed for dealing meth. When police raided his home, they found 2.6kg of the drug and more than NZ$170K (US$100K) in cash.

In 2018, a judge described Thompson as “the most comprehensive methamphetamine dealer Hawke’s Bay has ever seen,” before sentencing him to 13 years in prison.

But Thompson made it 15 years Friday after he was found guilty of organizing a small quantity of methamphetamine to be smuggled in for another prisoner in January this year, The New Zealand Herald reports.

Illegal Cellphone

Judge Bridget Mackintosh at Napier District Court sentenced Thompson to 23 months, which will be added to the term he is already serving. That’s for supplying methamphetamine, smuggling, and unauthorized possession of a cellphone.

Thompson used the illegal cellphone to contact an unknown person to provide the drugs, which were handed to a woman who was due to visit another inmate.

Johnson’s lawyer, Eric Forster, argued the Thompson had done this “simply [as] a favor” to the inmate and not for any personal gain.

But Mackintosh said Thompson’s behavior “undermine[d] any rehabilitation programs in prison and undermine[d] prison discipline.”

‘Later Bo’

Thompson was reportedly an aggressive poker player who liked to call out the phrase “Later Bo” as he knocked an opponent out of a tournament in an unpleasant breach of poker etiquette.

Prosecutors accused Thompson of being the head of a sprawling criminal network that flooded $4.2 million worth of meth into the Hawke’s Bay region over 11 months in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, New Zealand’s Police Asset Recovery Unit seized five vehicles and NZ$130K in cash from Thompson and his second in command, Petera Gamlen.

In 2022, authorities were granted court orders to seize Thompson’s home, an additional vehicle, and bank deposits totaling more than NZ$90K, despite his attempt to hide these assets by registering them under aliases.

In May 2023, Thompson attempted to have his sentence reduced in New Zealand’s Supreme Court. He argued that the no-parole period of six and a half years attached to his sentence undermined the established legal standard of granting discounts for guilty pleas. The bid was unsuccessful.
