Noted Vegas Actor Trash-Talks Tropicana

After Las Vegas, and the world, bid a tearful adieu to the Tropicana on Wednesday morning, not all the memories of the imploded icon shared by Vegas notables have been positive.

“I lived at the Tropicana Hotel for four months while we shot Vegas Vacation,” Ethan Embry posted to X/Twitter on Oct. 9. “It was an unlivable environment in 1996.

“Good riddance.”

And just who is Ethan Embry? We asked that, too, after his tweet was first reported on by the Las Vegas Review-Journal Thursday.

It turns out, Embry played Rusty Griswold, the son of Chevy Chase’s character, Clark, in “Vegas Vacation,” back when he was 18.

Embry’s memorable subplot saw his character win multiple cars as jackpots at the former O’Shea’s casino while gambling underage. (He used a fake ID he procured from a Frank Sinatra impersonator emblazoned with the alias “Nick Pappagiorgio.”)

Embry’s Trop dis drew over a million reviews and 332 comments — many of which concurred with Embry’s review but a few of which did not appreciate reading it the morning after the Tropicana was transformed into piles of rubble.

“Wow really?” commented X user @AlexisStevens02. “You must say this? Tropicana was a historical hotel, please shush. Really now …  Tacky Ethan. Bye.”

“That place employed thousands of good people over the years,” added @Senteney. “Sorry it didn’t live up to your haughty expectations.”

When @cesarmiles202 posted a photo of Embry enjoying a jacuzzi dip with a bevvy of beautiful, bikini-clad women, pointing out that he seemed “quite happy there,” Embry fired back: “Those are the Tropicana Girls and it was at the Mirage. Even the Tropicana Girls don’t go to the Tropicana.”

Cut to the Chase

The Tropicana wasn’t the only institution Embry freely trashed in the thread.

“Vegas Vacation’s” lead actor, who has developed quite a rep over the decades for unbearable on-set behavior, also caught a piece of his wrath.

When @SkipTrollington wondered if the film took four whole months to film because “Chevy Chase is such an unbelievable asshole,” Embry responded: “I’m sure that didn’t speed things up.”

To @luciandavid33, he said that Chase was never an a-hole to him in particular, but … “Did I see ugly? Yes.”

Leading Trade Groups Announce Partnership to Address Issues Facing Global Gaming Industry

Three of the world’s most prominent trade groups representing the interests of gaming operators in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe have announced a pact.

On Wednesday, the American Gaming Association, the UK’s Betting & Gaming Council, and the European Casino Association announced a memorandum of understanding that marks the beginning of a cross-Atlantic collaboration to share industry values and priorities. The three organizations each committed to addressing key matters facing the global gaming industry, including ongoing efforts to stop illegal gambling and promote responsible gaming, innovation, and casino security.

This new partnership is a significant step forward in our collective efforts to advance the legal gaming industry and protect consumers around the globe,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “By sharing our unique resources, we will expand our fight against illegal gambling to new fronts, work together to strengthen responsible gaming, and innovate around business best practices.”

The collaborative announcement came during the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) that is currently being held at The Venetian Expo in Las Vegas. The event concludes today.

Research Focus

The three trade groups, which promote laws and regulations favorable to the casinos and gaming operators they represent, say their alignment will better foster the development of joint research and expedite the implementation of new best practices.

The first initiative, the groups said, will be a law enforcement roundtable in January 2025. The discussion will center on how illegal gambling impacts the regulated industry and puts consumers at risk.

The session will explore strategies to enhance cross-jurisdictional communication and the development of “actionable solutions” to address the challenges associated with illegal gambling, a statement regarding the collaboration explained.

Gaming Getting Younger

The global gaming industry is richer than ever before. In 2023, the US, the richest gaming country in the world, generated almost $110 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR) from commercial and tribal gaming operations.

Gaming continues to expand worldwide. The United Arab Emirates’ forthcoming casino industry is projected to add up to $5 billion annually in new GGR, while new casinos in the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Korea additionally continue to open.

Macau’s COVID-19 recovery is ongoing. In the US, casinos continue to debut in jurisdictions like Virginia and Illinois, and the global industry’s eyes are heavily fixated on the impending integrated casino resort developments in New York City.

Miller said at G2E this week that the gaming demographic, at least stateside, is finally trending younger. After years of toying with new ideas, including electronic games that included skill elements, as millennials were thought not to enjoy slots nearly as much as their parents and grandparents, Miller says the industry’s innovators have finally found new ways to appeal to younger people. Sports betting has also helped.

A decade ago, the gaming industry was trying to figure out why we weren’t appealing to younger generations. The mantra back then was, well, we’ll get them when they’re 50,” Miller explained.

Miller detailed that the average age of a casino patron in 2019 was 50. Today, it’s 42.

“This is a huge shift,” Miller said. “It’s one that we need to keep driving to stay on the growth trajectory.”

But some offerings have been shuttered out of safety concerns, such as the sportsbook, poker room, and limited eateries.

Milton was lowered to a Category 3 hurricane as it headed into Florida on Wednesday. Winds were measured as high as 120 mph as of 7 p.m. Wednesday. The hurricane was expected to produce dangerous storm surges on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

“The safety of our guests and Team Members is our top priority,” the gaming property announced before the hurricane hit Tampa.

As we actively monitor Hurricane Milton, we want to keep you informed of any changes to our services and operations… We will provide real-time updates as the situation evolves.”

The Hard Rock Sportsbook will be closed. Kiosks will remain open. The Poker Room & Poker Room Snack Bar are also temporarily closed.

Among the other casino sites which are temporarily closed are: Center Bar, Cipresso, Constant Grind, Council Oak Steaks & Seafood, Food Court, Hard Rock Café, Icon Lounge, Kristal’s, Plum Lounge, Pool Bar & Grill, Rainmaker, Recreation, Rock Spa & Salon, Sugar Factory, The Cellar, The Rez Grill, The Rock Shop, and The Unity Store

The Teddy Swims concert scheduled for Thursday was canceled. All tickets will be automatically refunded at the point of purchase.

Also, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood is closing some restaurants and retail operations because of the hurricane. Updates are available online.

In St. Petersburg, Win! Derby/Derby Lane will temporarily close. Also, TGT Poker in Tampa is closed. It may reopen on Thursday.

Betting on Man’s Survival

The hurricane has led to some gambling.

A man named Joseph Malinowski, better known as “Lieutenant Dan,” who lives on a boat in Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, plans to remain on his docked vessel despite the dangerous storm.

I’m not going anywhere — the safest place to be is on a boat in a flood,” he said in an interview with News Nation.

Retardio Casino, a crypto casino with an online gambling license from the Autonomous Island of Anjouan, is taking bets whether he will live or die due to the hurricane, according to a report from Daily Dot, an online news site.

As of midday Wednesday, 63.4% of the bettors predicted he will survive.

Florida Evacuee Wins in Biloxi

In addition, Jason Jensen, a YouTube celebrity, also known as “Greatness Reinvented,” relocated from Florida and was riding out the hurricane at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Miss.

On Tuesday morning, he won $146,250 while playing a high limit Dragon Link slot machine, according to the Sun Herald, a Biloxi news outlet. Dragon Link is made by Aristocrat Gaming.

Irish Senate Debates Total Ban on Gambling Bonuses

Irish-senators-push-to-reintroduce-full-ban-on-bonusesThe debate over Ireland’s Gambling Regulation Bill 2022 is intensifying, with Senators Lynn Ruane and Alice Mary Higgins advocating for a total ban on gambling bonuses as the bill nears final approval. The original version of the bill had included a blanket prohibition on such bonuses, but recent amendments have altered this, allowing operators to offer free bets.

The bill, which has now entered the final stages of review in the Senate (Seanad Éireann), will soon advance to the report stage, after which it is expected to become law. During this process, multiple amendments have been introduced and debated. One notable change, made in May during discussions in the lower house (Dáil Éireann), adjusted the ban to permit free bets, albeit without targeted marketing.

Ruane Pushes for Stronger Restrictions

Senator Ruane, during the Senate debate on October 2, pushed to restore the bill’s original language, seeking to prohibit all forms of bonuses and inducements. She argued that such offers, including free bets, can be harmful to younger and more vulnerable individuals. Ruane emphasized that these inducements act as a gateway into gambling, particularly for youth, and noted examples from other sectors where similar incentives have been banned.

“These types of inducements are an entry point into gambling for young people. There are clear examples of inducements being banned in different contexts,” Ruane stated, pointing to restrictions in Ireland’s national lottery, alcohol sales, and tobacco products as comparable regulatory actions. According to her, the current version of the bill remains “unbalanced” and fails to sufficiently protect players, especially younger ones, placing the burden of responsibility on operators rather than individuals.

Supporting this stance, Senator Mark Wall expressed concern over how these regulations, especially in relation to free bets, would be enforced. He questioned the ability of regulators to closely monitor compliance. “For the life of me I cannot see why [the minister]

has to introduce free bets and inducements. We want to protect the most vulnerable. We have to do so,” Wall argued, advocating for a complete prohibition as the only way to truly protect those at risk.

Concerns Over the Impact on Legal Operators

However, not all senators are in agreement. Senator John McGahon raised concerns that a blanket ban could drive gamblers to unregulated, black-market operators, where they could be exposed to even riskier practices. He argued that restricting bonuses and free bets among licensed operators may backfire, leading consumers to seek these offers elsewhere.

McGahon also highlighted the competitive challenges that legal operators would face if such restrictions were implemented. “Without the ability to communicate directly with potential customers, gambling companies are left at a significant competitive disadvantage,” he explained, noting that other industries, such as entertainment and digital services, engage in aggressive marketing to similar audiences. The senator underscored that maintaining some level of engagement between gambling companies and players is vital for keeping the market balanced and preventing an exodus to illegal platforms.

Minister James Browne Faces Pressure from Both Sides

Deputy James Browne, who has been overseeing the bill’s development, finds himself at the center of this heated debate. Browne, who does not support a complete ban on gambling bonuses, reiterated that while restrictions are necessary, completely outlawing promotions would be unrealistic. He acknowledged the difficulties in managing both sides of the argument but remained firm in his decision to allow free bets under the bill’s current framework. “I do not support the complete ban of all promotions in the gambling industry,” Browne stated, rejecting Ruane’s proposed amendment.

Despite ongoing criticisms, Browne has defended the revised approach as a balanced solution, allowing for free bets while avoiding targeted inducements that could exploit vulnerable players. The final wording of the bill will soon be finalized as the legislative process draws to a close.

As Ireland moves closer to passing this significant piece of gambling legislation, the debate highlights the ongoing struggle between player protection and industry competitiveness. Whether the proposed amendments will further shape the bill remains to be seen, but the future of gambling regulation in Ireland hangs in the balance.

Playtech Reports Strong H1 2024 Results as U.S. Expansion Fuels Growth

Playtech-‘aggressively-pursues-U.S.-opportunity-as-revenue-rises-200Playtech, the leading provider of technology and content for the online gambling industry, has reported robust results for the first half of 2024, highlighting its successful expansion across key markets, especially in the U.S. and Canada. Total revenue for the six-month period ending June 30, 2024, increased by 5% to €906.8 million, with adjusted EBITDA up 11% to €243.0 million. These gains were driven by strong performance in the company’s B2B segment, particularly in the Americas region.

B2B Segment Fuels Growth

Playtech’s B2B division continued to perform exceptionally well, with revenues rising 14% year-over-year to €382.2 million. Adjusted EBITDA for this segment jumped by 38% to €112.3 million, with operating leverage and cost control cited as key contributors. “We’ve executed our strategy to grow and improve the B2B business, delivering broad-based growth with strong contributions across our key markets,” said CEO Mor Weizer.

A major driver of B2B growth has been Playtech’s expansion in the U.S. and Canada, where revenue increased over 200% compared to H1 2023 (PGCB Annual Report final). Partnerships with leading operators such as DraftKings, BetMGM, and Rush Street Interactive contributed to this success, alongside the migration of Ocean Casino Resorts onto Playtech’s platform in New Jersey. The company also expanded its relationship with PENN Entertainment, launching in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Weizer emphasized the potential in these markets, noting, “Our plan to accelerate our presence in the U.S. and Canada is already delivering, with revenues trebling in the period.” The company sees the U.S. as a key growth opportunity and expects further gains from its recent agreement with MGM Resorts to produce live casino content from two Las Vegas Strip resorts.

Strategic Moves and Snaitech Sale

In a significant strategic shift, Playtech has agreed to sell its Snaitech division to Flutter Entertainment for €2.3 billion. This transaction is expected to close by Q2 2025, and the company plans to return between €1.7 billion and €1.8 billion to shareholders via a special dividend following the sale.

While Snaitech’s revenue declined slightly by 1% to €483.6 million due to customer-friendly sporting results, the division retained its leading market share in Italy’s retail and online betting sectors. Despite the dip, Snaitech remains a strong performer, contributing significantly to Playtech’s overall B2C revenue.

Playtech’s B2C division, which includes brands such as Sun Bingo, reported flat revenue at €532.4 million compared to H1 2023. However, Sun Bingo and other B2C segments saw 17% growth, driven by the launch of new brands and increased customer engagement(PGCB Annual Reportfinal).

Continued Investment and Outlook

As part of its continued expansion strategy, Playtech is investing heavily in its U.S. operations. The company plans to significantly increase headcount in its U.S. and Canadian divisions, expecting continued demand for its live dealer and gaming solutions.

Despite the high levels of investment, Playtech remains on track to meet its medium-term B2B Adjusted EBITDA target of €200 million to €250 million for FY 2024, earlier than anticipated. “We are more excited than ever about the U.S. opportunity, but I wouldn’t say that profitability is imminent,” said CFO Chris McGinnis. Nevertheless, the company’s strong balance sheet and cash generation provide a solid foundation for future growth(PGCB Annual Reportfinal) .

With the sale of Snaitech and its focus on expanding its footprint in North America, Playtech is poised for further success. “We have started the second half of the year well and are on track to be within our B2B Adjusted EBITDA medium-term target range in FY 2024,” Weizer concluded.
