Golden Nugget Danville Hotel Possible, Sportsbook Prospects Murky

The Golden Nugget Danville Casino opened in May 2023 and by all accounts, the venue has been a success. So much so that the operator is mulling the addition of a hotel in the future, but the outlook for a retail sportsbook is more dim.

At an event earlier this week celebrating the venue’s first anniversary in the Illinois town, General Manager Jahnae Erpenbach reiterated that a hotel is still part of the long-term plans for the venue, but evaluating demand is critical when it comes to deciding when to make large-scale additions to the property, which is one of the newest casinos in the state.

We need to make sure we balance the demand in our ability to do that,” she said at the event.

The casino is a joint venture between the Wilmot family and Tilman Fertitta, whose Fertitta Entertainment Inc. (FEI) controls the Golden Nugget brand.

Strong Start for Golden Nugget Danville Without Hotel

Casinos and hotels are often joined at the hip, but there are dozens of examples of gaming venues across the US that don’t feature guestrooms. That’s often the result of market factors, including population and the ability of the surrounding region to attract conventions and tourists.

Even without a hotel, Golden Nugget Danville is off to a strong start. At the event earlier this week, President Jimmy Wilmot highlighted the venue’s contributions to city coffers. He said that since the casino opened, it’s paid Danville $2.8 billion in gaming taxes, $350,000 in property taxes, $402,000 in sales taxes and another $45,000 in food and beverage levies. Since its debut, the casino paid $5.6 million in taxes to the state of Illinois and has purchased $420,000 worth of products from Danville businesses.

Those are financial boons for Danville, which was banking on the gaming venue to lift it out of a public pension liability mess. Wilmot added that about half the visitors to Golden Nugget Danville since doors opened hailed from outside of Illinois.

That’s important because the property could face competitive pressure from Churchill Downs’ Terre Haute Casino Resort in Indiana, which is about an hour’s drive southeast of the Golden Nugget. Erpenbach acknowledged there was some impact to the Golden Nugget when Churchill opened the Indiana casino hotel in April, but that property won’t disrupt long-term plans in Danville.

Sportsbook Off Table Over Near-Term

Erpenbach added that the hope is Golden Nugget Danville will eventually have a retail sportsbook, but that appears unlikely over the near- to medium-term because DraftKings already has a land-based presence in Illinois and would be required to shell out another $10 million for a license to run a sportsbook at Golden Nugget Danville.

With the gaming company grappling with higher taxes in the state, that licensing fee isn’t economical, particularly when accounting for the fact that in Illinois, like the rest of the US, the bulk of sports wagers are placed online, not in person.

DraftKings and Golden Nugget have a relationship by way of the former’s 2022 acquisition of Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG), which made Fertitta one of the largest shareholders in the online sportsbook operator.

Borgata Hotel Incident Leads to Large Atlantic City Police Presence, Partial Evacuation

Numerous local police officers rushed to Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa late Thursday afternoon after a guest claimed to have a bomb and firearms.

The incident began at 3:55 p.m., when the Atlantic City Police Department (ACPD) got a phone call from a man who said he was in the Borgata. He said he was armed with firearms and an explosive device.

Social media posts further claimed that a person had barricaded himself in a hotel bathroom. He was threatening to shoot up the property, according to the online rumors.

But the rumors couldn’t be confirmed as of 7 p.m. Thursday, according to BreakingAC, a local news site.

Acting quickly, ACPD officers and Borgata security guards searched the large property. Portions of the complex were evacuated.

No Arrests

No suspect had been apprehended as of late in the afternoon. Neither a firearm nor explosive device were located.

Later in the day, police were still trying to confirm if the threat was valid.

But BreakingAC did report the Atlantic City Bomb Squad responded to the hotel-casino.

More than a dozen police vehicles also were seen outside of the hotel. TV news helicopters were flying over the neighborhood.

Officials remain tight-lipped on what was transpiring.

It appeared that many entrances to the complex were blocked, out of a concern about safety, according to initial news reports.

Cops rushed inside the MGM Resorts International-operated hotel, too. Traffic was being rerouted to nearby roads.

To calm the fears of those in the building, and nearby, the ACPD issued a late-afternoon statement.

There is NO active shooter,” ACPD Capt. Kevin Fair said in the online message to the public.

Partial Evacuation

“Out of an abundance of caution, portions of the building were briefly evacuated,” the ACPD statement also revealed.

Patrons have … since been allowed back in the building and law enforcement has cleared the scene.”

ACPD officers expect to issue a further update later on Thursday night.

Businesses inside the complex remained open, according to Philadelphia TV station WPVI.

The hotel has 2,798 rooms. It opened on July 2, 2003. Developed through a partnership with Boyd Gaming, MGM bought out Boyd’s 50% stake in the casino. The property is owned by Vici Properties.

Last year, it was announced Borgata’s Water Club was getting renovated. The hotel tower’s more than 700 guest rooms, and suites, were being refreshed.

Borgata is the longtime brick-and-mortar casino leader in Atlantic City.

Las Vegas MGM Hotel Is Site of Multiple Gunshots – Report

Between 30 and 40 shots were fired Sunday morning possibly from a balcony at the MGM Signature Towers in Las Vegas, according to unconfirmed witness accounts.

No one appeared to have suffered injuries from the gunfire at the off-Strip property.

A person of interest was apprehended late Sunday morning. He was identified as Jon Letzkus, 45, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

There was no additional threat to the public. The motive for the gunfire was unclear.

The reported shooting spree was revealed to authorities at about 6 a.m. (PT) as an active shooter, KLAS reported.

The incident took place on the 100 block of Harmon Avenue, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. It’s east of Las Vegas Boulevard and is located near the MGM Grand.

Evacuations Reported

The incident led to the lockdown of the Signature Towers complex and there were reports of evacuations taking place, according to BNN Breaking, a national news site.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) SWAT team members and other officers responded to the site. Eyewitnesses reported seeing some 30 police cars and an ambulance at the Signature Towers.

Word of the gunfire was announced on social media by the LVMPD shortly after 7 a.m. (PT).

Harmon Avenue between Las Vegas Boulevard and Koval Lane was closed to the public. Police advised pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area.

It’s likely that LVMPD officers were quickly in touch with Signature Towers security guards. Surveillance video was reviewed.

Security staff and LVMPD officers spoke with guests and staff to find out what unfolded at the property.

Being that Sunday is New Year’s Eve, as of 11 a.m. (PT), it’s unclear if holiday entertainment and dining at the complex will take place as scheduled.

New Year’s Eve Events

New Year’s Eve events in Las Vegas are expected to attract 356K visitors to the city, according to the Review-Journal. Given locals attending the festivities, too, Las Vegas could see about 400K total revelers taking part in various events to ring in 2024.

Key among the attractions is the “More in ‘24” fireworks show which is scheduled to take place starting at about midnight on the Las Vegas Strip.

It will feature over 12K gold-colored fireworks that will be on display during an eight-minute show.

Fireworks will be launched from rooftops of nine Las Vegas properties, including the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, according to KLAS.

Casino.org reached out to MGM Resorts for immediate comment. A spokesman referred questions to the LVMPD.

Casino de Montreal Announces Expansion With 200-Room Hotel in Parc Jean-Drapeau

Casino de Montreal is expanding its resort footprint on Notre Dame Island in Jean-Drapeau Park with a new 200-room hotel.

Loto-Quebec, the government organization that regulates and operates casinos and lottery gaming in the province, announced on Monday its plans to expand Casino de Montreal. The CA$150 million (US$112 million) project is expected to take two to three years to complete.

The hotel will be built adjacent to the current casino, which is located across the St. Lawrence River from St. Helen’s Island. Casino de Montreal doesn’t currently offer on-site lodging.

The Casino de Montreal has been a landmark in this city for 30 years. We’re very proud to announce the construction of this hotel, as it’ll move the casino to the top among the best entertainment destinations. It’ll showcase Montreal beautifully,” said Jean-François Bergeron, president and chief executive officer at Loto-Quebec.

Casino de Montreal replaced the International Universal Exposition, commonly called Expo 67, which was built for the 1967 World’s Fair. The casino has more than 3,200 slot machines and 115 electronic and live dealer table games.

Local Opposition

Loto-Quebec is a crown corporation that owns six resorts and gaming facilities. Along with Casino de Montreal, they are Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Casino de Mont-Tremblant, Hotel-Casino de Charlevoix in La Malbaie, Salon de jeux de Quebec, and Salon de jeux de Trois-Rivieres.

Casino de Montreal attracts more than seven million visitors annually. Caroline Prouix, the minister of tourism for the Lanaudiere Region, said an accompanying hotel will enhance the destination’s attractiveness and “further increase Montreal’s visibility on the world stage.”

Not everyone agrees a hotel is what Jean-Drapeau Park is missing.

Parc Jean-Drapeau is a jewel that deserves to be developed further, but not by adding a luxury hotel. I cannot believe the city is going to let a hotel be built in the center of a prestigious park. This is a completely unacceptable commodification of public space,” said Craig Sauve, a city councilor.

Sauve added that the luxury hotel will primarily serve an “affluent clientele.” He opined that those guests will be provided with “beautiful views of the Formula 1 track from balconies and luxurious suites” while Montrealers “lose out as they lose access to an entire sector of Notre Dame.”

Early Planning Stages

Specific details of the Casino de Montreal hotel aren’t yet known, as Loto-Quebec says it’s only in the beginning stages of fielding bids from developers. The lottery and gaming corporation says it supports a “low-height building” with the “highest sustainability standards to minimize the environmental impact.”

Parc Jean-Drapeau is the third-largest park in Montreal at about 520 acres. St. Helen’s Island was named by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who discovered it in 1611, after his wife Helene.

St. Helen’s was privately owned until the British government acquired the site in 1818 and used it as a fort until the new Canadian government bought it in 1870 and converted it to a public park. The artificial Notre Dame Island was constructed for the 1967 World’s Fair.

New rooms will begin to open in April with the balance expected before Memorial Day Weekend. On the 32nd floor, in the location of the former Immersion Spa, a 9,000 sq ft event space will open as well with one-of-a-kind views for visitors.

As we approach the resort’s 20th anniversary, we are more committed than ever to remaining a leader in hospitality and entertainment by continuing to evolve the Borgata experience,” said Travis Lunn, the resort’s President & COO. “We look forward to sharing our new vision with Borgata’s incredible guests in the coming months.”

Rodrigo Vargas Design Contributing

Award-winning international interior design firm RVD Associates worked in partnership with MGM Resorts International Design Group on designing and crafting the improvements.

East-facing rooms will have white curtains while west-facing rooms will have deep-blue curtains to accent a view of the evening marshlands in the distance.

Form, function, elegance, and leisure will all be incorporated with soft lighting hidden under the bed bases with soft light also coming from the headboard space of the beds. Ooulant space will feature “center-stage” with a table for daytime work or evening entertainment.
