Spielbank Bad Neuenahr Opens After 2-Year Closure Following Deadly Flood

spielbank_bad_neuenahr_opens_after_2_year_closure_following_deadly_floodGerman gamblers take great pride in their local gaming establishments much like some online gamblers have a favorite “home” website, but much more so. The operators and local officials do too, and they aren’t shy about showing that devotion and affection for the venues. More than brand loyalty, the connection is personal.

The spa town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is no exception to that rule as can be seen when looking at the recent opening of Spielbank Bad Neuenahr in a new location after a major disaster took the beloved local and regional gambling hall away.

The Night the House Edge was Not Enough

200 people died in Germany and Belgium 2 years ago in a historic flood. Damage to the local casino was so severe, and the insurance coverage to re-open in the same location would only provide about half of what it had for the prior calamity, so officials decided to never rebuild the 7-decades-old casino in the same location.

As described by Weather.com, the water came overnight on July 14-15, 2021. It funneled through sometimes narrow and steep sections, taking with it homes, bridges and roads and leaving behind a mud-covered path of destruction. Some 3,000 of 4,200 buildings along the River Ahr were damaged.

The casino was situated directly on the river Arh.

Instead, they chose to convert a nearby historic train station with neo-gothic architecture into a new casino.

After a soft opening a little over three weeks ago that allowed dealers and new staff to become accustomed to their new digs, Spielbank Bad Neuenahr held an official grand opening for the small but competent gambling spot on July 20, 2023.

During the official opening ceremonies, Michael Seegert, Managing Partner of Spielbank Bad Neuenahr GmbH & Co. KG welcomed local dignitaries and officials to the new location.

In his welcome message, Seegert said: “It’s been a little more than two years since, like countless others in the Ahr Valley, suddenly nothing was the same for us overnight. Our administration building was completely destroyed and flooded and demolished shortly afterwards with all our historical files and documents from 73 years of company history.

Our gaming facilities and the entire building services on the ground floor of the Kurhaus were smashed and the surroundings of the casino were devastated. The only pleasing aspect was that we did not have to mourn any victims due to the early closure of the casino. But the damage to property was immense and even the maximum compensation from the insurance company was not sufficient to compensate for all the damages. The question arose, so what should we do?”

Management looked at about a dozen nearby locations, and although they didn’t find one with everything they wanted or needed, the team settled for a well-situated location with less space – which meant the number of games would have to be reduced, but all other qualities could be maintained and the historic casino could continue to offer the same level of top-tier service to local gamblers and others nearby who were die-hard fans.

Familiar Location for Most Customers

The train and bus station was already a well-known hub for travelers to the area with 5-star hotels, so footfall was expected to remain strong. This proved to be true as customer traffic from all around began right away during the soft opening and never really waned.

We came to the only possible decision with the shareholders after difficult discussions that the future of the casino with these latent risks cannot lie in the Kurhaus,” Seegert added. “So, with a heavy heart, we gave up the traditional location and started looking for alternatives in Bad Neuenahr, in Ahrweiler, and in the surrounding area.”

Since there were only very limited as-built plans from the construction period, we experienced many surprises during the renovation work, and the installation of an air conditioning system, in particular, was a huge challenge that caused us many a sleepless night,” added Seegert. “That’s why we are particularly happy and proud to have a new casino in Bad Neuenahr just two years after the destruction.”

The new location holds about 75 slot machines, two blackjack tables, and two roulettes wheels. The prior location held 16,000 square feet of casino floor featuring 150 slots with 8 table games, and two restaurants.

All in all, I am very pleased that with the reopening of the casino, we can contribute another piece of the mosaic on the arduous path of reconstruction in Bad Neuenahr and the return to the old attractiveness of the city and the region,” Seegert added.

Seegert praised each and every participant in the arduous venture of finding and preparing a new home for the venue, commending the ‘highest level of commitment and a lot of heart and soul,” shown by employees, project managers, architects, and engineers, city administrators and others.,

Caesars Windsor Operating License to Expire, Ontario Opens Competitive Bidding

Caesars Entertainment’s operating license at Caesars Windsor will expire in 2025. In anticipation of reaching a new partnership with the Las Vegas Strip firm or a new gaming management entity, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) this week opened up a competitive bidding process.

In anticipation of renewing the contract or finding a new partner, the casino’s owner, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, is conducting a competitive bidding process. The OLG on Wednesday initiated its Request for Pre-Qualification (RFPQ) for its Windsor casino. The RFPQ, the OLG explained, is the first step in the procurement process to select the casino’s next operator.

OLG is advancing plans that will support the long-term vibrancy and excitement of the casino experience in Ontario,” said Duncan Hannay, the president and CEO of the OLG. “Releasing the RFPQ for the Windsor casino is the first step in selecting a highly qualified service provider that will ensure the long-term competitiveness of the site while continuing to generate economic benefits for the local community and for Ontario.”

To prequalify, interested firms must demonstrate to the OLG that the organization has a lengthy track record in managing a large casino resort such as Caesars Windsor. Companies that prequalify will advance to the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase of procurement.

Caesars Windsor is near Detroit and features 750 hotel rooms. The casino floor offers 2,230 slot machines, 85 table games, and a Caesars Sportsbook. The resort also has six restaurants and four bars, plus the 5,000-seat Colosseum theater.

Caesars Favored

The OLG says the casino operators that qualify for the RFP will be given the opportunity to present their ideas for the future of Caesars Windsor. In the second round of the bidding process, the OLG will supply bidders with documents and information outlining the opportunity and the sort of information the government is looking for in a proposal.

The OLG is a Crown corporation owned by the Ontario government. Formed in 1975 with the purpose of using lotteries and gaming to generate provincial tax revenue, the OLG today owns the province’s lotteries, charity gaming businesses, Aboriginal casinos, commercial casinos such as Caesars Windsor, and racinos.

The OLG partners with both public and private companies to manage its locations. While Caesars Entertainment is a publicly traded firm, the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation and Gateway Casinos, which operate numerous OLG casino properties, are privately held.

Caesars Entertainment has operated the Windsor casino throughout its entire existence, which dates back to 1994 when the venue opened as the first commercial casino in Ontario. Caesars is reportedly interested in extending its OLG contract and is the presumed heavy front-runner in the competitive bid.

Contracts Uniform

The OLG’s brick-and-mortar casino portfolio includes 28 locations. The OLG’s gaming partners all utilize the same formula to decide the amount of the gaming proceeds that must be shared with the government unit. Those proceeds are predominantly allocated back to the host community.

The City of Windsor’s revenue share from Caesars Windsor in the fourth quarter of 2022 was a little more than $2 million. Since its opening, the casino has benefited Windsor with more than $80.3 million.

UConn Opens as a Favorite Against San Diego State in NCAA Championship Game

Two teams remain in the hunt for the March Madness men’s college basketball championship, and #4 UConn squares off against #5 San Diego State in the final on Monday evening in Houston, Texas. UConn is currently a 7.5-point betting favorite over San Diego State.

When oddsmakers in Las Vegas opened the championship line on Saturday evening, UConn was installed as -6.5 favorite according to MGM. Early money backed UConn, and the line moved a full point as of Sunday morning.

For underdog bettors, San Diego State is now getting +7.5 points. You can back them on the moneyline at +290 on DraftKings. UConn is currently -350 as the moneyline favorite.

The points total in the championship game is currently 132 over/under. The total initially opened at 130.5 o/u.

UConn and San Diego State tipoffs off at 8:20pm ET at NRG Stadium in Houston.

According to ESPN, only 2.4% out of two million entries in their Men’s Tournament Challenge selected UConn to win the championship. Only 0.3% of all March Madness brackets at ESPN picked San Diego State to win the title.

San Diego State Advances on Buzzer Beater

San Diego State was the only team in the Final Four who were ranked according to the preseason AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll. The Aztecs began the season at #19, and they entered March Madness at #18.

San Diego State defeated Florida Atlantic, 72-71, on a buzzer beater to advance to the championship game. Florida Atlantic blew a 12-point lead in the second half, and San Diego State won their Final Four battle thanks to a 17-foot jumper at the buzzer from Lamon Butler.

Butler, a junior guard, averaged only 8.7 points per game for San Diego State this season. He had scored only seven points against Florida Atlantic prior to his game-winning shot.

I always dreamed of this moment,” Butler said. “I’m just happy it was able to come to fruition.”

San Diego State’s road to the Final Four included victories against #12 Charleston, #13 Furman, #1 Alabama, and #6 Creighton. San Diego State squeaked by Creighton in a one-point victory in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four.

Florida Atlantic embarked on a Cinderella run in this year’s March Madness as the #9 seed. The little-known Owls defeated #8 Memphis, #16 FDU, #4 Tennessee, and #3 Kansas State to earn their first-ever trip to the Final Four.

Before the tournament began, San Diego State was +6000 odds to win March Madness according to DraftKings’ futures board. Their title odds improved to +380 at the start of the Final Four.

San Diego State struggled to cover the point spread this season with a 19-16-2 ATS record, but they went 5-1 ATS during March Madness.

UConn Blows Out Miami

In the final AP Poll at the end of the regular season, UConn was ranked #10 in the nation, and Miami was ranked #16. Neither team earned a preseason ranking.

UConn obliterated everyone in their path to the championship game, and they won four March Madness games by at least 23 points. The Huskies became only the sixth team in March Madness history to win their first five tournament games by a double-digit margin. They blew out #13 Iona, #5 St. Mary’s, #8 Arkansas, and #3 Gonzaga to lock up a spot in the Final Four.

Miami fell behind early, but tied the game at 19-19 midway through the first half. Propelled by a 18-5 run, UConn headed into halftime with a 13-point lead. Miami trailed by 20-plus in the second half, but their last-gasp rallies fell short. UConn held on to win 72-59.

We’re able to kind of body blow our opponent,” said UConn head coach Danny Hurley.

“We feel like we’re the best defense in the nation,” added senior guard Tristen Newton.

UConn forward Adama Sanogo led all scorers with 21 points in the victory. The junior, originally from Mali, also hauled down ten rebounds and blocked two shots.

Miami was designated with a #5 seed in March Madness. They defeated #12 Drake, #4 Indiana, #1 Houston, and #2 Texas to earn a spot in the Final Four.

When the tournament began, UConn was +1600 odds to win March Madness. At the start of the Final Four, UConn saw their championship odds improve to -125.

UConn is the second-best betting team in the country this season with a 26-11-1 ATS record. They covered all five March Madness games, and they’re 10-1 ATS in their previous 11 games.

When one door closes, another one opens: Farewell sweet CalvinAyre.com

“Everything has as a beginning, a middle and an end, including companies”, Samuel H. Liggero

When walking back to our hotel after finishing CalvinAyre.com EiG coverage in October of 2013, I looked over to my producer (Rob) and camera operator (Mani) and said, “I think my calling is Bitcoin”.

A row of closed white doors and one colored yellow

As a team that year we had already covered several Bitcoin events including Bitcoin London and Le Web, both featuring Bitcoin enthusiasts who were eager to educate the world on this groundbreaking technology. EiG 2013 attracted several professionals in the Bitcoin space as well, at the time with a focus on introducing Bitcoin as a payment system for iGaming operators.

Calvin took notice of Bitcoin in the early days, immediately identifying its vast potential for his “first love”, the iGaming industry. Little did I know just how significant Bitcoin would become for CalvinAyre.com, Calvin Ayre as a person and myself as a professional. Fast forward to February 2021 and its time for CalvinAyre.com to hang up its hat. Bitcoin has actually become my calling.

The Bitcoin ecosystem, now in the form of BitcoinSV, has advanced to a level where so many of the pain points within the gaming industry can be solved with Bitcoin technology. For this reason, from today, I’m moving over to CoinGeek.com full time with a laser focus on raising awareness of BitcoinSV within the gaming industry and highlighting the innovative minds and relevant BitcoinSV-powered solutions currently existing in the market.

Looking back on my 11+ years with CalvinAyre.com, I’ve made life-long friendships, attended countless industry events, interviewed hundreds of leaders, made thousands of contacts, built deep relationships with organizers, even had the honor of delivering a DAF award or two back in the day (who remembers???!!) but best of all, had the pleasure of working with some of the most incredible colleagues along the way, many of which who I classify now as dear friends.

When I joined CalvinAyre.com in August of 2009, there was an enormous gap in the industry for an honest, transparent news site with regular, fresh video content. Over time, we grew from a tiny team of a handful of people to dozens, providing the industry with the juiciest breaking news and cutting-edge video coverage.

Today we pass on the torch to our event organizing and media production friends who have more recently developed outstanding news coverage and video teams dedicated to the gaming space, hopefully who I’ll be seeing at CoinGeek Conferences in the future.

Reflecting on my fateful words at EiG back in 2013, it was the entrepreneurial energy, the innovation and the excitement surrounding Bitcoin that originally drew me to it. Back then, the obsession about Bitcoin was not related to price, it was about the disruptive technology and this is what meant something to me. While a great deal has changed in Bitcoin between 2013 and now, the energy, innovation and excitement are all still there and I am looking forward to the next chapter of my career with Calvin Ayre and the Ayre Media team.

For those who wish to reach out, my contact info remains the same and my door is always open. I welcome you to come with me on this journey and I sincerely hope to see you at the next CoinGeek Conference, the ultimate meeting spot for those as excited as I am about BitcoinSV technology.
