Why UFC Vows Never to Return to Vegas Sphere

UFC 306, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14, will not only be the first sports event held at the Las Vegas Sphere. It will probably the last, if a lesson is to be learned from UFC CEO Dana White’s admitted mistake.

With production costs mounting and ticket prices in freefall, UFC 306 (aka Riyadh Season Noche) will be the first, and probably last, sports event to be held at the Las Vegas Sphere. (Image: UFC)

Tickets for UFC 306 sported the highest face value of any event ever staged in Las Vegas. They started at $2,500 for seats in the rafters and topped off at $23,437.50 for floor seats to the right of the Octagon.

As of Wednesday evening, only a few hundred of those face-value seats remained on Ticketmaster out of an original allotment of 18,500.

However, this does not mean that the event is nearly sold out. Thousands of tickets are still floating around reseller sites, where their prices have plummeted. StubHub has them starting at $720, Vivid at $502 and Seat Geek at $531.

On Ticketmaster, verified resellers (scalpers, basically) are losing their shirts on full public display. Right behind two of the original $23K seats (FLR3, Row 3, Seats 3-4) are five reseller seats on offer for $5,500 each (FLR3, Row 5, Seats 5-12).

The dots represent all the tickets for UFC 306 still available on Ticketmaster three days before the event. The blue ones are seats that never sold, the pink ones are on offer from verified resellers. These do not represent the only available tickets, however, as thousands are listed only on other reseller sites. (Image: Ticketmaster)

If these seats are still available hours before the event, their prices must be lowered much further if they are to sell at all. That includes the hundreds still listed at face value on Ticketmaster — unless UFC gives them away to VIPs, which is likely.

Why So Much?

Branded as Riyadh Season Noche UFC, for Mexican Independence Day two days later, the 10-bout spectacle promises an excellent lineup headlined by bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley defending his title against No. 1 contender Merab Dvalishvili.

But not $2,500-$23K-a-ticket excellent.

According to Billboard magazine, Dana White felt forced to charge that much to pay for its $8 million production costs — specifically, producing video content for the Sphere’s massive hi-def screen.

“Think about U2,” White told SNY Sports on Sept. 10, referring to the Irish rock band’s Sphere residency last year. “Whatever that cost them, they had 40 nights to amortize those costs. We just have one.”

Now, however, Billboard claims that White’s production costs have ballooned to $20 million — even after UFC partnered with outside producers, including Valerie Bush and Antigravity Academy, who will screen their own 90-second videos between bouts.

Of course, UFC will recoup some of its financial losses via pay-per-view sales, but, as White told MMA reporter John Morgan recently, “We’re not ever doing an event at the Sphere again,”

White Lies

Last October, White told ESPN’s Pat McAfee that “I have become obsessed with the Sphere,” adding that he had his entire production crew check out U2’s residency to conceive of ideas for visuals to envelop the Octagon.

“I’m telling you right now, this place is incredible,” White said.

If the new Billboard story is to be believed, however, White was not being entirely truthful.

According to the trade publication, White never wanted to stage UFC 306 at the Sphere. The Vegas orb only became an option after executives with MGM Resorts signed a deal with boxing promoter Al Hyman to bring Canelo Álvarez v. Edgar Berlanga to the T-Mobile Arena on Sept. 14 — a date White claims that UFC was promised in a 2017 anchor tenant agreement with T-Mobile.

That’s the arena that hosted last year’s “Noche UFC,” whose tickets were priced starting at $120 each.

MGM Resorts Online Room Reservations Return, Company Denies IT Job Posting

MGM Resorts International has resumed online hotel room reservations for its casino resorts in North America nearly two weeks after a cyber gang attacked its IT systems.

MGM Resorts online room reservations cyberattack

MGM on Friday said new room reservations can again be made online. However, the online reservation system differs from the company’s previous booking platform.

MGM’s casino websites redirect to “vacationsbymgmresorts.poweredbygps.com” when a user attempts to book a hotel room. The room reservation platform isn’t property-specific but requires a customer to select a specific property from the MGM portfolio.

Casino.org did some digging and discovered that the “poweredbygps.com” domain is owned by Travelscape, LLC. Travelscape is owned by the parent company Expedia Group.

MGM is likely partnering with the third-party booking giant to free up its phone lines, which have been clogged up with guests seeking to book, amend, or cancel their reservations during the cyberattack that was initiated sometime on Sept. 10.

Temporary Solutions

MGM’s phone lines have been congested with frustrated customers waiting as long as an hour to reach a representative. Along with restoring online room reservations from its casinos’ homepages, MGM recently initiated an online “Guest Support” form where reservation holders can seek a refund for a canceled stay between Sept. 13-24.

We will process your request as soon as we are able,” the company tells patrons. MGM Rewards participants seeking to use their loyalty points and comps must continue to call the company at 877-535-1987.

Though phone wait times might be reduced, MGM overnight guests continue to face lengthy check-in times, as self-check-in via the MGM app and kiosks remain unavailable. Overnight visitors must obtain a physical room key since digital entries remain disabled.

MGM has expedited the checkout process. Guests are told to drop their room keys into an “Express Check-Out” box near the front desk. A digital copy of each guest’s folio will be sent to the person’s email on file once the MGM systems are back up and running.

Job Post a Spoof

An online job advertisement supposedly from MGM Resorts seeking a Red Hat Certified System Administrator caused quite a stir this week on the social media platform X. Such a job is for an IT professional who, according to Red Hat. This American software company specializes in enterprise operating systems “is able to perform the core system administration skills required in Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments.”

Among the skills possessed by such an IT professional is the ability to “create and configure file systems and file system attributes, such as permissions, encryption, access control lists, and network file systems.”

The alleged MGM job listing, which was found on ZipRecruiter, advertised that the person would “be helping the MGM Grand Casino build its net new IT environment after the recent ransomware attack.”

The position was advertised at an hourly rate of $100, with the contract gig running for about two weeks. The IT tech would be expected to work 10 hours a day, seven days a week, the posting listed.

An MGM spokesperson, however, denied the legitimacy of the job posting.

Hard Rock’s Center Bar May Return to Virgin Las Vegas

It looks as though the future of the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas may depend in no small part on its past. Cliff Atkinson — the former Fontainebleau Las Vegas president who was installed last month as Virgin Hotels’ new president — says he’s considering bringing back the center bar, the centerpiece of the Hard Rock Hotel from its 1995 grand opening to its quiet 2020 closure.

The original center bar at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is pictured before its 2015 renovation and 2020 removal by the property’s current owner, Virgin Hotels. (Image: Hard Rock Hotel and Casino)

“That’s one (idea) we’re heavily considering,” Atkinson told the Las Vegas Review-Journal last week. “You don’t want to go back in time, you want to look forward, but that is one thing people just knew, and they associated with our property.

“If you want to lean into a little nostalgia at this property, that’s a great way to do it.”

In other words, Virgin probably goofed by removing it.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino opened on March 10, 1995 as the world’s first rock n’ roll-themed resort. Despite its off-Strip location — a mile east of the Las Vegas Strip on Harmon Avenue — it was an unmitigated success.

The casino floor’s museum-quality display cases — whose artifacts included a smashed Kurt Cobain guitar and multiple Prince stage outfits — brought seemingly every Gen-X Las Vegas tourist through the door for at least one initial visit.

But it was its center bar — which on Friday and Saturday nights was packed with young people on 360-degree display to the entire casino — that spurred most of its return visits.

Musical Owner Chairs

The property was a joint venture between Hard Rock Café founder Peter Morton and Harveys Lake Tahoe, whose share Morton bought out in 1997. A new 11-story hotel tower was added in 1999, as part of its $100 million initial renovation.

Morton sold the property to Morgans Hotel Group and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners in 2007, prompting its second renovation — to the tune of $750 million.

In 2011, Morgans sold the property to Brookfield Asset Management, which hired Warner Gaming as its operator. Realizing the center bar’s value, Brookfield renovated it, for $3.4 million, four years later. Upgrades were also performed on the resort’s convention facilities and on a number of restaurants.

Brookfield sold the property three years later to Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels, in partnership with a group of investment firms, for a reported $500 million. Virgin then spent an additional $200 million on yet another renovation to the property — one that removed the center bar.

A Rebrand Too Far?

As strongly suggested by the resignation in March 2023 of Virgin Las Vegas Hotels president Richard ‘Boz’ Bosworth after fewer than two years on the job, Virgin has been unable to recapture the original Hard Rock Hotel’s mojo.

In addition to the center bar, Atkinson, as quoted by the R-J, said his new/old plans also include reopening the Hard Rock’s former Body English, which later served as a theater for Magic Mike.

Taxation of Gambling Winnings
