Google Maps Routes Cars from Las Vegas into Desert Trap

While driving home to LA from the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix earlier this month, Shelby Easler and her family saw an unusual Google Maps notification. It advised them that the straightest route, southwest on Interstate 15, faced an impending dust storm.

The app then advised an alternate route, a desert road from Nevada to Southern California that would not only avoid the dust storm, but also save the family 50 minutes.

Easler’s brother, who was driving their Toyota SUV, followed the directions, which led to a single-lane off-roading path, behind a long caravan of cars following the same directions.

Because our navigation said we were going three miles and then making a left, we assumed that we would hit a road eventually, and because all the other cars were going straight, we assumed it was leading somewhere, which it was not,” Easler, 22, said in a TikTok video taken during her experience that has garnered 134K likes.

Because a vehicle at the front of the long caravan was already stuck, none behind it could proceed. Making matters worse, the path was too narrow for anyone to turn around, either.

And more vehicles just kept arriving.

No Help from Police

According to Easler, a 911 call didn’t help, because the California Highway Patrol “was dealing with the freeway shutdown and accidents, so they couldn’t get to us.”

After being trapped for several hours, the drivers realized that they needed to turn around, one by one, by driving through thick-barked bushes and over rocks and cacti. The move punctured dozens of tires and put most out of alignment.

Easler described their SUV as “doneso,” and said her family had to Uber back to Vegas and fly home while it was towed back to Las Vegas for some miracle work.

A Google spokesperson told the Washington Post, which also covered the story, “We apologize for what happened, and can confirm that we’ll no longer route drivers traveling between Las Vegas and Los Angeles down these narrow backroads off Interstate 15 near the California-Nevada border.”

When he shared Easler’s video on X (formerly Twitter), @LasVegasLocally quipped: “If Google Maps ever sends you to the Mojave Desert, be suspicious. This is how AI will try to take us out.”

Phish to Follow U2 Residency at Las Vegas Sphere

The second musical act to headline the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas will be Phish. The four-piece jam band, which draws its following from the Furthur Festival crowd, will perform four consecutive shows at the globular concert venue behind the Venetian from April 18-21. They follow U2’s opening residency.

Phish's four-show engagement at the Las Vegas Sphere in April 2024 is announced by the Sphere itself

According to a press release from Sphere Entertainment, each night will feature “completely unique setlists and visuals.” However, as all Phishheads already know, their improvisational idols have never performed the same show twice in the 40 years since they formed in Burlington, Vt.

“From the moment we first heard about Sphere and its potential, we’ve been dreaming up ways to bring our show to this breathtaking canvas,” Trey Anastasio, the band’s guitarist and vocalist, is quoted by the release. “We’re thrilled to present this completely unique experience to Phish fans.”

Big Unanswered Question

Ultimately, the Phish booking is a limited engagement, with the Sphere’s press release eliminating all possibility of an extended stay by stating that these “will be the only shows Phish will perform at the venue in 2024.”

This leaves unanswered the big question of who will follow U2 with the next proper, fully-produced residency. The Eagles, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Paul McCartney, and Bon Jovi have all been mentioned as possibilities by reports citing unnamed sources. So far, none has committed, though Styles and the Eagles are favorites because both are managed by Irving Azoff’s Full Stop Management, which also manages U2, and Azoff reportedly works as a booking consultant for the Sphere.

It is believed that the unprecedented offer made to U2 to serve as the Sphere’s guinea pigs — a reported 90% of ticket sales plus $10M to finance the production — may have weakened the Sphere’s negotiating strength, since similarly popular acts would feel deserving of similar terms.

Sphere Phishing

Though Phish isn’t managed by Azoff, the band’s cozy relationship with MSG Entertainment, and its implied lack of a multimillion-dollar visual production pretty much guarantees that its terms weren’t equivalent to U2’s.

Phish sold out New York’s similarly sized Madison Square Garden for seven nights last summer, and will return to that venue for another series from December 28-31. The Garden, like the Sphere, is owned by MSG Entertainment.

Anastasio was also the first to test out the Sphere’s immersive audio system, which he used for an acoustic solo show at New York’s Beacon Theatre, also owned by MSG Entertainment, in August 2022.

A “ticket request period” for Sphere’s limited Sphere engagement is now underway at tickets.phish.com, according to the press release, and continues through Monday, December 11. All remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, December 15 via the same website.

A sex worker remains in jail after she was arrested for attempted murder. She beat and robbed a wheelchair-bound man at a room in Caesars Palace Las Vegas last Friday, police said.

Napria Wilson, 26, also was charged with robbery and residential burglary after she stole about $6K from the man, police added.

When a hotel security guard arrived at the room at about 7 a.m., the victim was covered in blood and was helpless on the floor, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS. He was on his back between two beds. He could be heard moaning and yelling for assistance, police said.

Several bones in his face were broken and fractured. There were extensive bruises on his body, and his eyes and hands were swollen, according to official reports. The bed sheets, furniture and floor also had blood on them, according to Las Vegas TV station KTNV.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities didn’t have an updated condition on the man as of Friday. It was unclear if doctors needed to perform surgery to treat his injured face.

The unnamed man, who appeared to be in his late 60s, has limited mobility and uses a scooter due to his chronic disabilities. He was able to tell the guard he solicited the services of the sex worker when the two met on the Caesars Palace gaming floor.

Target of a Scam

Initially, the man gave her $500 for sex acts. Wilson then took the money and stayed in the hotel room, according to the police report. But Wilson asked the man for money again. After the victim told Wilson he had already given her the funds, Wilson began arguing with the man.

Wilson again ordered him to give her the money. She then stole his wallet and left.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers searched the hotel for evidence. Officers also watched the hotel surveillance video, which showed Wilson leaving a hotel room. She then went into a hotel elevator, which took her to the ground floor, the video revealed. She walked out of the hotel exit and entered a taxi.

She vomited after getting into the cab.

“Wilson apologizes to the driver and tells him she will pay him extra to get her ‘out of here’ and appears to pass him a $100 bill from her purse,” according to the police report.  The taxi driver then drove away with her as a backseat passenger.

Awaiting Plea

Police identified the suspect as Wilson after checking with the taxi company. Wilson was later apprehended. She was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday.

Her case was turned over to local prosecutors. She has yet to enter a plea on the charges.

Las Vegas Raiders Fire Head Coach Josh McDaniels After 3-5 Start

The Las Vegas Raiders cleaned house late on Tuesday evening when they fired head coach Josh McDaniels, general manager Dave Ziegler, and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi.

The Raiders are 3-5 and currently tied for last place in the AFC West. They were 3-3 before they lost two games in a row, including a 30-12 loss against the Chicago Bears in Week 7. Their most recent loss occurred on “Monday Night Football” in a 26-14 defeat against the Detroit Lions.

After much thought about what the Raiders need to move forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave,” said owner Mark Davis in an official statement. “I want to thank them both for their hard work and wish them and their families nothing but the best.”

Antonio Pierce will take over as the interim head coach after spending the start of this season as the linebackers coach. Champ Kelly was the assistant GM under Ziegler, and he was promoted to general manager for the remainder of the season.

Pierce becomes the 12th head coach for the Raiders since they last won a playoff game as the Oakland Raiders in 2002. This also marks the fourth time since 2008 that the Raiders switched head coaches in the middle of a season.

McDaniels Sacked After 25 Games

McDaniels had a six-year contract with the Raiders, and he lasted only 25 games before they fired him. He has a 9-16 record since taking over in 2022.

The Raiders went 6-11 in their first season under McDaniels, which was a disappointment considering he inherited a 10-7 team that qualified for the playoffs. The Raiders parted ways with quarterback Derek Carr and signed Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency this offseason.

After Week 3, McDaniels emerged as the betting favorite to become the first head coach to lose his job this season.

McDaniels has now lost two head coaching jobs when he was let go midway through his second season. McDaniels went 11-17 with the Denver Broncos during his first stint as a head coach. He lasted 28 games before the Broncos fired him in 2010.

Davis indicated he will seek a new head coach and general manager in the offseason. Potential head coaching candidates include Brian Flores, Jim Harbaugh, Dan Quinn, and Raheem Morris.

Raiders Plagued by Offensive Woes

McDaniels won six Super Bowls as a coach under Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. He was the offensive coordinator of the Patriots when the Raiders hired him in hopes that he could bring his winning offensive philosophy to Las Vegas.

The Raiders compete in a high-scoring division with gunslinger quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes from the Kansas City Chiefs and Justin Herbert from the Las Angeles Chargers. However, McDaniels failed to deliver a team that could challenge their divisional rivals.

The Raiders won three games in 2023, but all three victories were close games and decided by nine total points. They never won a game by more than four points. They averaged 14.2 points per game in their losses.

The Raiders’ downtrodden offense averaged 15.8 points per game and they were the third-worst scoring team in the NFL this season under McDaniels. The offense generated only 268.3 yards per game, which was the second-lowest in the NFL.

The Raiders have the worst rushing team in the NFL this season. Their paltry rushing attack averages only 70 yards per game, and that’s even after running back Josh Jacobs ended a contract holdout.

Betting the Raiders the Rest of the Season

The Raiders are currently tied with the Denver Broncos (3-5) for last place in the AFC West. Oddsmakers didn’t have much faith in the Raiders this season, which is why they had a projected win total of only 6.5 over/under.

The Raiders are +1200 odds to make the playoffs, according to a prop bet at DraftKings. They’re a huge favorite to miss the playoffs at -3000 odds.

The Chiefs are tied for the best record in the AFC at 6-2 thanks to their good-luck charm, Taylor Swift. The Chiefs are -700 odds to win the AFC West for an eighth-consecutive season.

During the preseason, the Raiders were +1200 odds to win the AFC West. After they started 3-5, their divisional odds dropped to +4000.

The Raiders play their next two games at home in Sin City. They host the New York Giants in Week 9, and square off against New York Jets on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 10.

The Raiders are a slight favorite at -1 against the Giants. Quarterback Daniel Jones missed three games with a neck injury and he’s expected to return versus the Raiders.

The Raiders have a 3-5 record against the point spread (ATS) this season. The Giants are 2-5-1 ATS.
