Living Las Vegas: Best of Vegas’ Casual Eats

There’s no shortage of gourmet food options in Vegas. Sure, you can indulge in endless fine dining options and new celebrity food concepts. But if you’re looking for something a little more casual, check out some of the locations I recently visited below.

So many food halls and so little time. But make sure you head over to Proper Eats Food Hall at the Aria, which has replaced the hotel’s buffet (a sign of the times).

A look inside Shalom Y’all, at Proper Eats Food Hall. (Image: Casino.org)

It features a gorgeous dining room with a circular bar and colorful booths. I instantly gravitated to the lovably named Shalom Y’all, originating in Portland, Oregon. Their chicken shawarma pita sandwich—with roasted cabbage, green chiles, and tahina—delivered exactly the spicy kick I was looking for.

On my list for future drop-ins are Seoul Bird from London, Egghead from NYC, Wexler’s Deli from LA, and DJ/producer Steve Aoki’s Pizzaoki. There’s not a Subway in sight here.

For those who like to dig deeper, hidden behind the Easy Donuts space is a speakeasy (Easy’s Cocktail Lounge), with live music, including performers like the deeply soulful and glamorous Skye Dee Miles, whom I’ve seen a few times light up the Ghostbar atop The Palms.

Yukon Pizza

My slice of New York-style pepperoni pizza from Yukon. (Image: Casino.org)

After generating a two-year pop-up buzz (at downtown’s Vegas Test Kitchen) for their wood-fired sourdough pizza, Yukon Pizza opened recently as a brick-and-mortar at the Huntridge Shopping Center on Charleston east of the Arts District. Their special sourdough is a “125-year-old family heirloom” beginning during the “Yukon Goldrush of 1897.”

The by-the-slice “N.Y. Style Pizza” with pepperoni was on-the-money, bringing a big smile to this Bronx boy’s face on a rainy Vegas day. Also feeling the need to be guilt-free, I took home their excellent “The Meatless Lovers” pizza with “Vegan Pepp & Sausage” and “N.Y. Sauce” for dinner.

Chi Asian Kitchen, The STRAT

If seeing the wondrous technological dance revue “ILuminate” at The STRAT is on your itinerary, why not kick off the night at this relatively new Asian eatery?

It’s uniquely designed—like a “bustling Chinese alley, with a street-inspired interior”—which would explain why one of the dining areas looks like a bicycle repair shop. The spicy cucumber salad, soup dumplings, pork belly bao buns, and “beef chow fun” were all irresistible dishes.

Sista Kim’s Kitchen, New Orleans Square in Commercial Center

Wandering through hipster heaven New Orleans Square in the historic-and-reemerging Commercial Center east of The Strip, I was delighted to find this new soulful eatery; it’s now a brick-and-mortar after establishing itself as a food truck and catering service.

Sista Kim Kitchen’s feel-good sandwiches—shrimp po boi, pastrami, and fried chicken—plus burgers, wings and fries are a delicious cut above, and you can wash it all down with their unapologetically sweet tea.

I’m so enamored of this spot that I recently held one of my “People Need People” mixers here for an array of Vegas creatives, and Sista Kim obliged my request to pipe in lots of Isaac Hayes classics like “Theme From Shaft,” which kept the soulful vibes going all afternoon.

Leticia’s Cocina & Cantina at the Santa Fe Station Hotel & Casino

At this head-of-the-pack Mexican eatery in north Vegas, I scored a culinary winning lottery ticket by ordering the Pescado al Pastor. That’s the seared sea bass with adobo sauce, served with tossed greens, arroz poblano (a white casserole rice with cheese), and habanero mango salsa.

My wife went in a simpler direction by going with what she described as a deeply satisfying burrito with potato, cheese, and refried beans. I returned to Leticia’s a few weeks later, jumping headlong into the stratospheric Costeno Relleno—the chile poblano filled with shrimp and topped with salsa verde (which I opted for instead of the white creamy cheese sauce); it’s served with black beans and standout cilantro rice.

Having already been to Leticia’s groovy offshoot—the casual Letty’s in the Arts District—it feels good to now be in love with the eye candy-rich and price-friendly mothership where authenticity rules the day.

I’ll be headed back soon for their Sunday brunch because the tres leches French toast sounds like another winning ticket.

Karim Benzema leads Real Madrid towards Championship Trophies in both European Cup & Spanish League

karim_benzema_leads_real_madrid_towards_championship_trophies_in_both_european_cup_and_spanish_leagueLately, Karim Benzema has been hitting on all cylinders just at the right time as Real Madrid continues to strive towards winning both the European Cup as well as the Spanish League trophy.

Plagued by Minor Injuries

Unfortunately, the Ballon d’Or winner in Benzema has been dealing with successions of minor or little injuries throughout this professional football season. Including an injury that managed to keep Karim from playing for the national club of France during their run to the 2022 World Cup final from Qatar.

The highly – skilled 35 – year – old forward is now once again seeming to be mostly healthy and Benzema is starting to play up to his potential as one of the best players in European professional football as Real Madrid prepares to make a serious run at 2 – major football championship titles.

Karim Benzema Scores on Barca!

Benzema managed to net a goal during the 2nd – half hat trick in order to lead Real Madrid over Barcelona with a final tally of 4 to 0 on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 which put his club team into the Copa del Rey final for the very 1st – time since the year of 2014.

Real Madrid is all set up now to face – off against Chelsea next week during the upcoming Champions League quarterfinals as they attempt to defend their championship title, and if they do come out victorious with a huge win it would become a record – extending 15th – European Cup trophy they would be hoisting.

Karim was named football’s best male player due to his remarkable 2021 – 2022 campaign in which he has only played a total of 31 out of Real Madrid’s 45 – games throughout all competitions this season all based upon the minor injuries he has endured lately. He has been effective as ever when fully healthy, especially in key contests in the Champions League as well as the Copa del Rey.

Benzema popped in 3 – goals during Real Madrid’s 6 to 2 aggregate victory over Liverpool in the round of 16 of the Champions League. Following Karim being left off of France’s national team for the recent European Championship qualifying matches, the supreme striker has now scored back – to – back hat tricks for the Real Madrid football club. He pushed pass 3 – goals in a range of just 7 – minutes during a 6 to nil rout of Valladolid in the Spanish League only 3 – days prior to his hat trick at Camp Nou. Benzema is on fire right now, and he is exemplifying why he is still one of the best goal scorers in the world at the moment.

“The work during the (international) break has certainly helped him,” the head coach of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, expressed. “He’s found his best condition and with the quality he has, he makes a difference for sure. He’s still one of the best players in the world at the moment and when he’s in good shape he makes a difference.”

The Strategy of Coach Carlo Ancelotti

Coach Ancelotti may possibly be lured to rest Karim or potentially other regular starters on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 when Real Madrid hosts Villarreal in a Spanish League match prior to battling Chelsea on the following Wednesday.

Ancelotti defeated Barcelona’s counterpart in Xavi Hernández through the play of his attack – minded strategy that started 11 with Benzema accompanied by the Brazilian forwards of Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.

The Italian head coach of Real Madrid also chose to go without a stopper in the midfield as he opted to go with the passing of Luka Modric as well as Toni Kroos to accommodate the lightning – fast speed of Federico Valverde.

To be fair, Xavi had many fewer options available to him because Pedri, Ousmane Dembélé, Frenkie de Jong, and Andreas Christensen were all out die to various injuries. This may be the main reason of the ultimate inevitable result demonstrating Real Madrid’s biggest victory at Barcelona’s home stadium since their 5 to 1 victory way back in 1963.

“His numbers say it all,” the defender for Real Madrid, Dani Carvajal, stated in regards to Karim Benzema. “He was hugely important for us again and we’re thrilled to have him in this vein of form at this stage of the season because he can give us lots to smile about.”

In the meantime, Real Madrid will now have to heavily – focus on the Champions League title with Barcelona presently being up a solid 12 – points ahead of Madrid at the top of the Spanish League standings.

“We played against a great Real Madrid team,” Xavi Hernández explained. This was a tough night that will take us time to recover from, but we have to be positive and think about Girona and the league.”

Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose Launches Vegas Chess Festival

Derrick Rose has founded a high-stakes Las Vegas chess tournament. The New York Knicks point guard and his friends will compete in the Chesstival while in town for this year’s NBA Summer League.

The Chesstival will be held July 7 and 8 at Resorts World. According to a press release, the event will include professional athletes, musicians, and amateur chess players “competing in a high-stakes series chess tournament.” A purse of $147,500 will be awarded to the top 16 finishers, with the winner receiving $50K, the runner-up $20K, and third and fourth place $10K each.

“The game of chess is something I’ve been passionate about since high school,” Rose, 34, said in the release. “Chess is undeniably competitive and strategic at its core, which are two characteristics I’ve carried throughout my career.”

Rose to the Occasion

Rose was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2009 and became the youngest player to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2011 at age 22. He recently finished his 14th NBA season, having missed 2013’s due to an ACL injury. According to a story in the New York Daily News, Rose listed founding a chess league as one of his post-retirement plans. Two others were vertical farming and buying a library.

Speaking to the media last December about his eventual retirement from basketball, Rose said he wants to “be able to walk away whenever I want to walk away and smile while I’m doing it.”

Registration for Rose’s tournament is available for $7,500 at Chesstival.com. According to the website, the price includes one seat at the tournament plus one for a spectating guest, entry for two to all events including a Zouk after-party, food and beverages at select events, and a gift bag.

Genting Not Rethinking Decision to Scrap Japan Plans

Japan signed off on Osaka as the destination for the country’s first casino-resort, but that’s not enough to prompt Genting Singapore to revisit its scuttled plans to bid for a gaming license in the country.

Amid news that the Osaka scheme is moving forward, paving the way for MGM Resorts International and Orix to open Japan’s first gaming venue there, Genting Singapore told investors “the company is not currently pursuing a bid to develop an integrated resort project in Osaka or in Japan.”

(We) previously pursued a bid to develop an integrated resort in Yokohama City, but this was discontinued when Yokohama City decided to cancel the […] integrated resort bid process,” according to a statement issued by the Resorts World Sentosa owner.

Genting shuttered its Japan operations in late 2021 after it became increasingly Yokohama policymakers and residents wanted no part of a casino-hotel.

Genting Continued Coolness on Japan Not Surprising

With MGM on track to secure Japan’s first gaming permit, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other casino operators reconsider Japan plans. For now, however, that scenario isn’t playing out.

Genting was among a slew of gaming giants that eventually abandoned Japan plans, citing lack of clarity on what was already a frustratingly sluggish process. Other members of that group included Caesars Entertainment, Hard Rock International, Las Vegas Sands, Melco Resorts & Entertainment and Wynn Resorts.

In May 2020, Sands pulled out of the Japan race with the late Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson criticizing costs and procedures involved with opening a high-end gaming property in Japan. Several months later, Wynn Resorts said it’s closing its Yokohama office, citing the coronavirus pandemic and a desire to focus on its Macau operations.

It now appears as though Osaka will be the only city in Japan to be home to an integrated resort for an extend period of time as a plan by Casinos Austria to open a comparable venue in Nagasaki has yet to be approved by regulators.

Domestic Demand Could Prop Up Osaka Casino

While the Osaka integrated resort is expected to be a contributor to the city’s efforts to lure more international visitors, analysts believe it will initially be supported by locals and visitors tourists from other parts of Japan.

“At this stage, we … conjecture that the majority of demand is likely to come from local Japanese demand (like any other major gaming jurisdictions globally), and this is likely to be created incrementally – ‘supply drives demand’ as the decade-old mantra in the industry goes,” noted JP Morgan analysts DS Kim and Mufan Shi in a recent report. “Hence, we do not foresee any material impact on existing jurisdictions in Asia. Time will tell, and we shall find out in 7 to 8 years.”

That jibes with speculation that, at least to start, the Osaka venue will not pose a threat to Macau.

Osaka Seen as Long-Term Growth Catalyst for MGM

After several years of waiting, the Japanese government finally made it official on Friday: Osaka will be home to the country’s first casino-resort.

mgm osaka

The venue, which is slated to open in 2029 and carries an estimated price tag of $8.1 billion, will be 40% owned by MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM), 40% by Japanese financial services firm Orix and 20% by a local investment consortium.

Shares of the gaming company closed modestly higher this week, indicating there was some benefit to reports that surfaced prior to official approval of the Osaka gaming property. From here, it could be awhile before Japan is material to MGM shares, but analysts believe that will happen in the future.

We estimate that the property will generate around $4 billion in total sales in 2029 (its first year of operation) with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margins in the 20s around the end of the decade, generating a return on invested capital in the teens,” wrote Morningstar analyst Dan Wasiolek.

The risk to the Bellagio operator is that it could take several years after the initial financial contribution for the Osaka integrated resort to deliver cash flow, meaning MGM likely won’t reap immediate profits. On the other hand, Osaka could pay long-term dividends for MGM while improving the operator’s geographic footprint.

Over Long-Term, Osaka Could Be Important to MGM Shares

Barring unforeseen developments with shorter timelines or acquisitions, Osaka will be MGM’s third venue outside, joining a pair of casino-hotels in Macau. It could take a while, but the Japan venue could be an important contributor to MGM’s bottom line.

“In total, we see the property generating a high-single-digit percentage of company EBITDA by the end of our 10-year forecast,” added Wasiolek.

MGM executives have highlighted the advantages of being a minority partner in the Osaka project. They note that status minimizes upfront capital commitments and risk, while still providing the operator with ample upside potential.

Osaka is already prime destination for tourists visiting Japan and with the addition of the integrated resort, it could result in 20 million or more annual visits to the country’s third-largest city. Additionally, it could be well into 2030s —  perhaps later – before another gaming destination opens in Japan, indicating the Osaka could enjoy monopoly-like protection for at least several years.

MGM Osaka Won’t Cannibalize Macau Ops

Rebounding Macau is the dominant casino destination in the Asia-Pacific region and MGM China is gaining market share there, but Wasiolek doesn’t see the Osaka venture presenting a problem to the operator’s Macau properties.

“We don’t expect the opening of the Japanese property to have a meaningful impact on demand in the Macao gaming region, which benefits from the captive opportunity of 1.4 billion Chinese citizens and an enclave of resorts,” concluded the Morningstar analyst.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Macau accounted for 22% of MGM’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, restructuring or rent costs (EBITDAR). The company owns about 56% of MGM China.
