Polymarket Activity Soars with Help from US Presidential Election

Polymarket, the internet-based marketplace that allows users to wager on everything from politics to pop culture to sports to weather, is experiencing soaring interest among users — much of which is supported by the US presidential election.

While 38 states and Washington, DC currently permit some form of sports wagering and seven allowed betting on the Oscars this year, political betting is prohibited in regulated markets in the US. Polymarket avoids regulatory scrutiny (mostly) because it doesn’t offer bets in the traditional sense. Rather, the cryptocurrency-based platform provides investors/bettors with an avenue to wager on outcomes by purchasing shares based on an event.

Shares on Polymarket are priced from $0 to $1 with a share trading at 50 cents implying even odds of the event occurring or not happening. Perhaps owing to unusual circumstances, including the assassination attempt on former President Trump and President Biden declaring he won’t seek a second term, Polymarket activity is surging.

Now that betting on the November election has approximated $290 million, both daily volume and number of new active traders have hit all-time highs of $20 million and 30,000, respectively,” noted ARK Invest analyst Lorenzo Valente.

Polymarket was founded by Shayne Coplan in 2018 and experienced a substantial uptick in activity during the 2020 US presidential campaign as well.

Polymarket Adding New Accounts at Rapid Pace

Bettors’ enthusiasm for Polymarket is evident in the site’s prodigious pace of new account openings over the past three months.

May marked the first time more than 10,000 new Polymarket accounts were opened. The actual number was close to 20,000. In June, the number was roughly 35,000 and as of July 19, the figure was already close to 30,000, according to Dune Analytics data.

Contracts on Polymarket are purchased via the polygon cryptocurrency, which is based on the ethereum blockchain. The token has ties to some other wagering entities.

Polygon solves pain points associated with blockchains, like high gas fees and slow speeds, without sacrificing on security. This multichain system is akin to other ones, such as Polkadot, Cosmos, Avalanche, etc., according to the token’s developers.

Polymarket Could Highlight Potential of Predictive Markets

There’s no denying that sports betting has taken flight in the US, but bettors want access to new markets, including politics. Traditional, regulated gaming companies cannot provide that access, but prediction markets can and that access could be a growth driver for companies such as Polymarket.

“Prediction markets could have real staying power, thanks to platforms that not only are tamper-proof and transparent but also provide liquid bets with real-time consensus data, not to mention the “wisdom of crowds” that provide highly accurate odds,” concludes ARK’s Valente. “As distrust of legacy media increases globally, prediction markets could become “information credibility” barometers that gauge public sentiment and surface truth.”

Current popular bets on Polymarket include the winner of the presidential race, whether or not Biden will finish his term, the country that will take home the most medals at the Summer Olympics and what team will win the Super Bowl.

Nebraska Racing and Gaming Regulators Approve License Transfer to Ogallala

The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission (NRGC) last week voted unanimously to approve a transfer request for a horse racetrack license from Hastings to a forthcoming facility in Ogallala.

Hastings Exposition and Racing, Inc. owner Brian Becker asked the NRGC to allow him to relocate his state-issued horse racing license from Fairplay Park to a new racetrack in Ogallala some 200 miles west.

Becker is partnered with Iowa-based Elite Casino Resorts on a new quarter horse racetrack measuring 5/8 of a mile and casino resort near Lake McConaughy. Dubbed Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack, the $100 million project is targeting a 178-acre near Interstate 80 and Highway 26.

In 2020, Nebraskans passed a statewide ballot referendum that legalized commercial casino gambling at the state’s six horse racetracks. The measure additionally legalized in-person sports betting.

Western Frontier

Though Hastings is still slightly east of Nebraska’s center, Fairplay Park has for decades been the westernmost horse racetrack of the six facilities. Understanding that the 2020 casino referendum could cause gaming saturation concerns, the initiative provided a one-time opportunity for racetrack owners to relocate their racing license to a more favorable market but on the conditions that they construct a new racetrack, conduct live racing, and gain local government support.

Becker initially partnered with the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma to build and operate a casino in Hastings. But after the Hastings City Council objected to the casino, Becker found a new partner in Elite.

Elite is also partnered with the Hall County Livestock Improvement Association where it’s under construction of converting Fonner Park into an entertainment destination called Grand Island Casino Resort. A temporary casino has operated inside the track’s grandstand since December 2022. The permanent resort is to open next year.

With Hastings just a 30-minute drive south of Fonner Park, Elite and Becker decided a more profitable casino could be realized in Ogallala. Lake McConaughy and its 30,000-acre state park is a popular summertime vacation destination.

Located near the Nebraska panhandle, Lake Mac Casino Resort will be much freer of competition.

We are thrilled to bring a first-class resort, grow out-of-state tourism, add jobs, and invest $100 million into Ogallala and Western Nebraska,” said Dan Kehl, CEO of Elite Casino Resorts.

In their 7-0 vote in approving Fairplay Park’s license transfer from Hastings to Ogallala, NGRC commissioners expressed enthusiasm for expanding the state horse racing industry west.

Fonner Park and Hastings had been our western frontier. We’re going to move that hundreds of miles to the west,” commented Dennis Lee, the chair of the NRGC. “Ogallala really has a unique opportunity to open racing and gaming to Western Nebraska.”

The tentative plan for Lake Mac includes a 37,000-square-foot casino floor with 650 slot machines, 14 live dealer table games, and a sportsbook. The destination’s planned amenities include a hotel with 180 rooms, a convention center, several food and beverage offerings, a rooftop restaurant, an RV lot, and an expansive truck stop and travel center.

WarHorse Omaha Opening

During their Friday meeting, the NRGC signed off on allowing WarHorse Casino Omaha to open on August 6.

The forthcoming permanent casino located at Horsemen’s Park is a partnership between the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association and WarHorse Gaming, the latter being a subsidiary of the Ho-Chunk, Inc., the commercial business arm of the Winnebago Tribe of Oklahoma.

WarHorse Omaha is set to open with 800 slots, 20 table games, and a sportsbook. An on-site restaurant and bar is also ready for guests.

Isle Casino Gambler Claims Jackpot with Fake Name, Gets Double-Busted

An Iowa man who joined the state’s self-exclusion program was arrested after he tried to claim a jackpot at the Isle Casino in Waterloo, Iowa, while pretending to be someone else.

Matthew James Wessels, 43, signed up for the program in January 2023, effectively meaning he agreed to ban himself from every state-licensed gaming venue in Iowa.

Nevertheless, Wessels visited the Isle Casino on May 17, 2024, where he gambled and hit a jackpot for an unspecified amount. But he used a false name and social security number when he filled out the paperwork to claim it.

Forgery, Trespass Arrest

Unhappily for Wessels, the true owner of the social security number was not down with the scheme and called the police, according to court documents.

Wessels returned to the casino on May 19 and was asked to leave, the filings state. Later, he was arrested on forgery and gambling charges, as well as trespassing.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission’s self-exclusion program, like those in many states, allows gamblers to bar themselves from casinos, usually because they have a gambling problem.

Customers identified by the casino as excluded must be removed from the premises and can be subject to prosecution for criminal trespass.

In most states, including Iowa, the forfeiture of any winnings is a condition of joining the self-exclusion program.

Casinos themselves can face fines or even license suspension for failing to comply with state regulations related to self-exclusion. But most states limit disciplinary action to violations linked to willfully or inadvertently marketing to excluded individuals.

FBI Drugs Sting

After losing out on his jackpot, and now facing criminal charges, things were about to get a whole lot worse for Wessels. On July 16, he agreed to sell four pounds of methamphetamine for $14K to an undercover FBI agent posing as a drug dealer, according to federal court records.

Wessels agreed to meet the agent in the parking lot of a restaurant in Waterloo that same day. On arrival, the suspect carried a tan bag filled with drugs into the agent’s car and was arrested on the spot.

He is now facing federal charges of possession with intent to supply a controlled substance. Wessels is no stranger to such charges. In August 18, 2017, he was sentenced to more than six years in a federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

Sex Worker at Bellagio Steals $85K Rolex Watch from Casino Guest, Cops Reveal

A suspected prostitute is to appear in court next month for allegedly swiping an $85K Rolex watch and a $35K gold necklace from a guest in the Bellagio Las Vegas Hotel.

The incident took place on July 26, 2022. But the suspect, Maiah Meleschi, wasn’t arrested on a warrant charging her with the crime until days ago, on July 3.

The woman and man had met on the hotel’s casino floor after he’d been playing blackjack.

Meleschi walked up to him, and the two went up to his hotel room at about 5 a.m.

Two Had Sex

He paid her $1K in exchange for sex, police said. The man then fell asleep. When he woke up at noon, Meleschi was gone. So were his Rolex, the chain, and some $3K in cash.

He alerted the police. It took some time for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers to identify the suspect. They watched a surveillance video of her meeting the man, and of the couple walking to hotel elevators to get to his room.

She was also seen in a video leaving the hotel wearing both the chain and the luxury watch, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

Meleschi was charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property, as well as two counts of burglary. She was booked at the Clark County Detention Center and has since been released from custody.

She’s next due in court on August 8. If she’s convicted, she could face a prison sentence.

No word what happened to the expensive watch or the missing cash. But the necklace was sold by Meleschi at a local pawn shop for $11,600, police said.

LVMPD officers said Meleschi was previously arrested for prostitution and trespassing, KLAS reported.

The man was visiting Las Vegas from an undisclosed hometown.

Trick Rolls Explained

LVMPD called the theft a “trick roll.” That’s commonly used to describe when a sex worker steals items of value or cash from a client.

Trick rolls are frequently reported to LVMPD officers. Often, they take place at hotels.

For instance, last September a visitor to Caesars Palace Las Vegas awoke to find that two women stole $120K in cash and his $20K Rolex watch. He had just won the jackpot at the casino.

He chose to collect the money in cash rather than taking a check. He had been drinking heavily when he met the two women on the gaming floor. The three then went to the victim’s room and had sex. The man fell asleep shortly after and awoke to find he had been the victim of a theft.

The suspects were identified as Coriana Singelton, 29, and Marriah Vanderwaal, 32. They were both charged with grand larceny, burglary, and conspiracy. It’s unclear how the cases against them were adjudicated.
